Does the Fairphone gen. 6 support Desktop Mode / external displays over USB-C?

So sad. :frowning: Nice and clean design but it’s clearly a downgrade in some places.

At least FP5 is not obsolete, it’s just an alternative to FP6.

So definitely no external display support? That is a downgrade

Wait what? Noooooooo ! Why?

My excitement just dropped from “I need to get this right away!” to “never getting this at all”. Who in their right mind still uses USB-C 2.0 in a new product in 2025? Seriously?!
Sorry, but that’s a deal breaker. Makes me really sad

Just wait a bit. I am pretty sure this is a typo. I at least have never heard of USB-C 2.0.

Hi! New here, made a Forum account because I’m not super Spec-savy and this seems like the best place to ask–
Does the USB-C 2.0 mean that you can’t use the Phone with an external Display? Or is that a Firmware thing?
Because having that feature might be the deciding factor to me, when I compared the FF6 specs to my current phone on GSMArena, it seemed like everything else would be kind of a downgrade?

I sure hope so … but if you compare it to the specification of the FP5, there is stated:

So, if it was the same, they could’ve just copied it.

At least the Snapdragon® 7s Gen 3 would support USB Version 3.1 according to Qualcomm specs sheet.

Yes, you can’t. It would also be mentioned in the specification, like with the FP5

No, unfortunately that’s a hardware limitation. So unless fairphone (or somebody else) releases a bottom module with USB-C 3 and DisplayPort Alt Mode, you won’t be able to connect it do an external display.

Edit: just to be perfectly clear, physically, you can connect it to a display, but there will not be any output.

Ah, thats a shame. Thank you for the reply!

I also think it was a typo. Because the FP4 already had USB 3.0…

yeah … that’s even more puzzling, because on the connector side it’s like a couple of additional resistors for less then a few cents that you need … so they didn’t really safe anything in doing that.

This doesn’t seem like a totally uncommon combination of format and speed.
Here in Fairphone land, just take a look at the Fairphone 3/3+ specs … https://support.fairphone.com/hc/article_attachments/360075296031

For the Fairphone 6 it might still be a typo, though.

I have my fingers crossed!

I hope so. I was pretty sure that is a CPU limitation, but clearly SM7635 supports USB 3 and external display.

The big new thing in Android 16 is that it supports desktop mode using an external display by default. But it sounds like Fairphone 6 is downgrading the USB connection to 2.0, which means it won’t be able to connect to external displays at all. The desktop mode as a standard feature on all Android phones seems like the biggest new feature in years for Android.

What does it matter if the FP6 will get 8, 80 or 800 upgrades if the hardware cannot handle it evsn standard features on the first new Android version?

If this is true, I predict very few will keep the FP6 for even 2 years.

I hope thos is a typo or that the phone is pulled from stores for an emergency upgrade right away. If only Fairphone had involved the community in the process.

The FP5 supports “USB-C 3.0 (OTG capable) can be used to connect USB Sticks/SD-Cards/display (also Android™ desktop mode)/Camera/Audio Amplifier/Network-adapters directly”.
But the FP6 spec sheet claims only “USB-C 2.0 (OTG capable) can be used to connect USB Sticks/SD-Cards/Audio Amplifier/Network-adapters directly”.

Is this a mistake on the spec sheet or is it this actually a major regression from 5Gbps and video output (DisplayPort Alt mode) with the FP5 to 480Mbps and NO video output in FP6?

If this is indeed a regression this is a real shame as it happens right as Google is finally making the stock Android desktop experience usable in Android 16.

Moved your post as there is already some discussion ongoing, see above

In the specs for the new Fairphone gen. 6 in the connectivity section external displays are notably missing on the USB-C plug:

USB-C 2.0 (OTG capable) can be used to connect USB Sticks/SD-Cards/Audio Amplifier/Network-adapters directly

while this is explicitly mentioned with the Fairphone 5

USB-C 3.0 (OTG capable) can be used to connect USB Sticks/SD-Cards/display (also Android™ desktop mode)/Camera/Audio Amplifier/Network-adapters directly

Does this really mean that Fairphone gen. 6 does not support external displays and/or Android Desktop Mode?
And is the OTG connection really downgraded to USB 2.0?

If so, may there be a USB-C 3.0 module become available in the furture for gen. 6?
