I just tried to update my FP4 from iodéOS 7.4 to 7.5 today. But it ended in a boot loop init_user0_failed. After trying to restart again and again approx. 5 times, the phone switched back and started with 7.4.
Discussing this issue in the fediverse, I got the impression that also other FP and other OS (including stock android) may face the same issue. Additionally, updating iodéOS 6 to 7 on a FP requires in some cases a complete re-installation of the OS. Other phones do not seem to be affected.
Does FP have an issue which may cause OS updates not working?
I dont think so that there is any general issue with any FP. Thats always dependent on the system and maybe Android version. In the past Android upgrades always had to be done manually its quite great that isnt the case any more.
Supported updates are indeed very comfortable. Until this year I neither had any issues regarding updates. But it seems that lately also with a FP6 and stock android it’s not always working. That’s concerning. If users are not updating their systems anymore because they are afraid of losing data, they end up in outdated OS versions and vulnerability risks.
Hence the update process should be rock-solid.
There should be no problems with regular updates within the same Android version, but sh*t can happen, such is life, and such is software, be prepared with a backup of everything important beforehand.
Major OS version upgrades, however, are always much more tricky and error-prone when done in-place over the existing installation, this is independent of the device and the OS. They are always best done with preparation and a new install from scratch including a data wipe.
As almost nobody wants to do this and users demand convenience, vendors give the people what they want against better technical knowledge and just hope for the best. There are always users who draw the short straw nonetheless, even if there’s not an overall issue, which can happen, too … https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS22/comments/1i3oqrp/samsung_acknowledged_update_bricking_phones/ … https://www.reddit.com/r/ios/comments/1fjiop4/ios_18_bricked_my_iphone_15_pro/
Of course sh*t can happen. Especially when upgrading major versions.
But if the system doesn’t start anymore after upgrading from one minor version to the next, I have my questions regarding the quality of the update testing process.
At least in my case (update iodéOS 7.4 to 7.5 on a FP4) it doesn’t seem to be general issue. Other users reported no issues with the same update.
Well in your case address it with Iode, this has nothing to do with Fairphone. However you cannot address all potential issues in testing. Even Google Pixel Phones are often a brick after Android upgrades.
Not sure what you are trying to create. Its as @AnotherElk said: things can happen always at any time with any brand. This is not a Fairphone isolated issue.
If Fairphone’s own update causes an issue, it’s Fairphone’s issue to resolve, of course … if nothing else helps, a new install will be done. Be safe with a backup etc.
Software became too complex for giving guarantees that nothing can happen, and everybody’s smartphones are not a certified medical device or an airplane (= heavily and costly regulated for more, not total, software safety).
Name a different smartphone vendor, we’ll look for an incident which already happened, or we’ll simply wait for one, as there’s every probability that it will come.
I just had the same issue: FP4 and the iodéOS 7.4 to 7.5. And to keep repeating the restart brought me back to the old version.
So, obviously this is an iodéOS 7.5 related problem. Maybe in connection with the FP4.
For me a reminder to check whether I have my backups up-to-date.
If it recovered to the OS version prior to the update (did it?), this would have been due to a recovery mechanism built into Android dealing with possible OTA update fails … https://source.android.com/docs/core/ota/ab
It is usually triggered by several unsuccessful boot attempts directly after the update.
