Do the fairbuds work with just one bud?

I bought all the parts so I could have ONLY a right earbud (I can’t use the left one so I thought I’d save materials and money by just buying the right one). I assembled everything and:

  1. the case charges (it’s now showing a solid green light while plugged in
    but
  2. although the right earbud has sat in the case for 2h, it does nothing when I take it out of the case.
At no time are fairbuds visible to pair with from my FP4.

I tried to use the case to enter pairing mode, but pressing the button never results in a blue light from the case.
I tried to factory reset the case by pressing the button for 10 seconds, but I never get a flashing white light.
I opened the earbud and opened the battery compartment and closed it again - no change.
When I put the earbud in the case and close it, the LED is white: from full brightness and fades down to black, then flashes once.

Is it just not possible to make this work with only one earbud, or is the earbud broken or what? Any further steps I can follow to try to fix this?

I have already asked support, but I figured I’d see if anyone here’s had the same issue?

A bit more searching finally found me this: The New Fairbuds: Nine things you need to know - #4 by cryppynl which indicates they CAN work with just one.

But the question is: will the one “replacement” bud ever decide to pair if it’s all on its own in the case?
