Black Screen/Booting Issue After FPOS C.073 Android 13 Update

As I’ve already erased my phone, I tried to use FP tutorial to install firmware manually after having unlock my bootloader with a USB dock.
And it worked, my FP4 is booting correctly now

I don’t think switching partitions will help. But still the dock and unlocking is probably helpful to be able to install FPOS manually as mentioned by @satanasdiabolo here.

I’m gonna try to get a dock tomorrow, should I try switching slots or reflash FPOS directly? (I’m fine with losing my data)

So you’re on A13 and it works after the reflash?

Giving the other slot a try will do no harm at all!

Yes it’s working under A13

FWIW: I just spoke to someone who did the Android 13 upgrade and it went smoothly. Their phone has never had a custom ROM, nor did they unlock their bootloader.

As for myself: I’m still hesitant to take the upgrade. I don’t have a fallback phone that I could use in case my phone would get bricked. I can’t miss the phone, as it’s my business phone and it is also the device I use for MFA in many places.

I have done the Android 13 upgrade and I have no problems.
On the forum you hardly will get reactions from people who have a normal working phone.

I unlocked the bootloader with a Lenovo USB-C dock with DP (for laptops). Then installed a new FP Andoid 13 Stock with “Flashing for Fastboot”. Now everything works.
Little help: fully charge the FP4, otherwise the USB-C dock will lose the connection every second because it is trying to charge the phone. Don’t leave the FP4 in the lock screen, I couldn’t find a key on the keyboard to bring it back.

I bought a dock earlier and just tried it, got Keyboard and Mouse connected and phone on, it booted and showed a weird lock screen but I couldn’t get out of the lockscreen

I had to do a wipe/reset 5 times in recovery mode. So that the FP4 starts in setup mode. When the FP4 is configured it starts with the lock screen from which there is no escape.

You can get out of the lockscreen. You just have to hit space, followed by your pin code, followed by enter. This will bring you to the home screen. I’m not sure if it’s common for everyone, but I’m using a Lenovo Docking Station and the connected monitor is constantly switching on and off. Input is only received when the monitor is on, so I have to make quick actions in the milliseconds the screen is enabled. I should be able to reach the settings using these short windows of time though.

A big thank you for all the help! Fairphone responded to me today, telling me that I would need to send the phone for repairs, which isn’t easy for me, as I live outside Europe. You guys saved me a lot of hassle <3

Alright I got through the fixing pretty smoothly and now running A13, unfortunately I didn’t try switching slots. Is it possible that the same black screen stuff will happen again after the next update? This time I’ll leave OEM unlocking turned on just to be safe. Thanks to everyone who helped figuring this out

I had a bricked phone similar to other people. Run Lineage OS at some point in the past but reverted back to stock and had been running with no issues for 6+ months. After updating to A13 I couldn’t get past the blue dot in my boot sequence and had a locked bootloader. I was able to connect my FP4 to a usb-c monitor an enable OEM unlocking and USB debugging and manually install the Fairphone OS. Thanks a lot for the earlier replies!

Thanks for the hint using a USB-C dock to backup my data.
Since I’ve never thought about doing it that way, how will it be done? I am worried about the installed apps, their settings and my other data.
And how would I use that backup to restore it in case I need to?
Doesn’t need to be a detailled explanation, a brief version is just fine.

EDIT: To be clear, wouldn’t Titanium Backup suit just fine for me?

Cool!! :+1:

Especially that we found a solution to get the broken FP4’s working again together. And all this without any help by any Fairphone emplyee.

Actually that was fun and it was some decent trouble shooting work.

So, everyone affected: enjoy using your phones again. :slightly_smiling_face:

And the USB dock is a nice thing to have anyway. Together with Kodi or Mediathek apps for instance, you can turn your phone into a full media center.

Well, appearently I did. :sunglasses:

I used to try several Custom Roms before coming back to stock, I can’t even say, which ones I didn’t try.

Today I thought I’d put my free time to good use and prepare myself for the black screen after updating. I tested, if my USB-C dock would work with my FP4 and I backed up all my apps and data. When I finally started the update everything just worked fine.
After ten minutes or so it just rebooted with Android 13, stable and persistent. Only thing: I lost my root status, but that is perfectly fine compared to what I was prepared for. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Speaking of root: Does anyone have the current boot.img ready to share, please? :innocent:

A post was merged into an existing topic: Android 13 upgrade causes FP4 to freeze

What I do not understand is the fact, that the display driver is going nuts after the upgrade.
Taking into consideration, that everyone who had a custom ROM Installed, went back to original OS with the full flash/wipe method, it should clean all the partitions / rewrite all crucial partitions needed for FP OS.
Now when you upgrade, how can this go wrong only for those ppl with custom Roms? I am a bit baffled, that this is happening and this leads me to the question, if the entire go back to Stock is even a real go back to stock.

2nd point: is there a way for FP to include a full wipe in the recovery?
