Better camera module needed now?

Why should I buy (now in mid 2017) a meanwhile 3 years old technology with a bad camera for such a high price? And who of Fairphone company can guaranty, that in another 4 years there are still spare parts available for FP2 in parallel to a new FP3??
Faiphone just ruined their credibilty just letting drop F.P.1 after 3 1/2 years… I would be mad if I buy now that “old” FP3!!

Nobody forces you to, and with priorities on current technology and high end camera you are not in the target group.
The camera isn’t bad, it is just not the best, for normal peoples’ everyday photos it works totally fine. And the Fairphone 2 is still a modular and OS-wise very open phone with sufficient performance for everyday smartphoning, but not for power-gaming I guess. I would be interested in comparable competition.

Nobody really. We live in capitalism. Companies can go bancrupt in any short while.

Only if someone forced you to buy it, which nobody does.

As far as I remember FP1 was all about fairer electronics, right? For that reason Fairphone bought an existing device and labelled it to get behind the supply chain of a smartphone. And I guess they were quite successful with that.
I supported that idea by buying this device (one of the very first), but I was also totally aware that I was a kind of “Versuchskaninchen” here. I sold the device after half a year because I was totally not satisfied with the user experience. I did not feel “guilty” about that because I supported them in the beginning, nonetheless, the device was just not meant for me.

To believe now that a labelled device made in China will be supported for many years is somehow naive, don’t you think? Despite from that, I am an optimist and I hope everybody including Fairphone learnt their lesson and things will become better with FP2.

Nonetheless, I came back to FP2 because I liked the idea of the modularity. Since the camera is the thing which bothers me the most, I can’t wait for an update. A a tech person, I can’t wait to show to my friends that I just replaced my camera against a better one.

Sorry for the long text, but just my 5 cents to that topic.

I think we should keep on topic: :camera_flash:

Nice news on the camera. I wonder if pre-orders placed now already get the new camera?

Are there technical details already available? I’ll shurely buy it as soon as it shows up in the shop.

Jep, me too. And as soon as it is supported by LineageOS. But as my experiences with this community are, that will just take a few hours. =)

The Pointe is, may i told it allready, if someone buys a new camera or display, he should send the old one back to Fairphone, so it could be used as a replace. So it’s better then recycling.

That’s what the Market is here for. Less transportation, no storage cost and no taxes.

Yes FP2 is may be a bit old, but i guess if FP gross up, it will may make a big jump, from 2013 hardware to (let’s say) 2022 hardware, but Fairphone needs us.
Like Trump would say: make Fairphone great.

A post was merged into an existing topic: Fairphone 1 maintenance comes to an end

Now in July 2017 Huawei sells Y6 with almost the same features as FP2 for 149,- (Aldi Nord) and the Y6 has even the better camera! The lifecycle of both Android 6.0 smartphones by now - bought in July 2017 - is to be expected very similarily to 3 - 4 years, as proven by FP 1 ! However the current price for a halfway fair produced phone should never be higher than 3 x of the competitive market price, perhaps 450,- for FP2 now… Thus something may be wrong with the road map politics of Fairphones economie: maybe a bit too socialistic? Under these circumstances I do not believe at Fairphone’s sustainable success. Instead my very difficult idealistic decision results in buying a FP2 NOW AGAIN …replacing my too early died FP1. However -with that untrue decision- I cannot convince any of my friends to follow FP at the moment…

6 posts were split to a new topic: Is the Fairphone 2 price justified?

I just really hope it comes at some point soon. And I even more hope that it’ll be of good quality! I envy all those people with their latest iPhone and I know that a camera of same quality is unrealistic and nothing to hope for, but as mentioned in an earlier post I mainly need my camera for cute toddler pictures (no baby no more - gosh they grow up fast!) and toddlers really suck at holding still for a moment to take a picture or happen to have the perfect light around them. So I’m no less proud, but pics really could be of better quality lately… :’( Doesn’t have to be the top high-end iPhone 7 camera, but I’m really hoping for a decent upgrade soon!

You mean: Provide new baby in the mean time!

Babies are better at holding still and have a photograph taken :joy:

I’m very very keen to get the camera module upgraded.

Here’s hoping that news comes soon from Fairphone about the results of the software testing.

From that single line above, I’d assume that new camera modules are already produced, in stock, and the software is being tested. Can anyone confirm?

Is there any way to help?

You can test software against prototypes which are 100% final hardware, but not the final product., just saying  .

They’re not in stock yet, but it will take only a few months if all goes well. The software developers are probably working with engineering samples at the moment, as @AnotherElk suggested.

+1 with those who wish a new better camera module.

Would be for me THE most important improvement for my FP2.
I’m still using my good old canon digital camera on holiday, but if it’s going to die (shows unfortunately the first signs):

  1. Don’t wan’t to buy a new digital camera
  2. Absolutely don’t want to buy a new phone with better cam
  3. Still want to make (quality) pictures
  4. So a new FP2 Module 13 or 16 Mpx (or more!) would be exactly what I’d need!

@FPTeam: You know how to achieve perfection… :stuck_out_tongue:

I heard Fairphone send out some emails today to buyers whose delivery is delayed. They announce “a surprise that will improve your Fairphone experience”. Might it be phones delivered in mid September already include the camera? I’m excited!
