Astrophotography App

, ,

As tonight we might see again aurora borealis in regions you would normally not see them (like in may) I would like to share an App I found for Astrophotography coming with a 78 pages long manual and listing FP3+FP4 as supported devices. I havent tested it yet.

It seems the App can crash the FP5, happened always when initiating the App, after the reboot its usable…
EDIT: the developer could intensively test the App themself on a FP5 and could not find a way to reproduce the crashes I still see, so whoever wants to test the App on a FP5 might not see any issue when using it.

Max exposure time on the FP5 is only 1/4 instead of 8 sec EDIT: now its 8 seconds

On the FP4/no crashes and max exposure time is 2sec instead of 1/2.

So for the FP4 it could be usable and helpful, on the FP5 at the moment rather not.

Would love to see Astrophotography being part of the stock camera app sometimes in the future :crossed_fingers:.

Hi Yvonne, I’ve got your bug report and I send you a response but email could not be delivered to your mail server. Thats why I ask here:

Can you please describe the crash:

  • does the app crash immediately after starting?

  • or when you press the shutter button?

  • or at the end of the first image capture?

  • or when does the crash occur?

Cheers

Michael

Hi Michael, thanks for getting back and even creating an account here just for this😊

Murena currently has sever issues with all their server, no mails are coming through, so no surprise your answer wasnt sent.

The FP crashed after installing the App and opening it foe the first time and I think as well when I opened the app “the first time of the day”, than after the reboot when opening it it worked (just to note I havent done extensive tests).

Aha, thats very interesting, app crashed only at first start and with second start it works.
In case you participate in Googles improvement programm the so called stack trace is sent and I can see it in Google developer console. Thats the error report. Maybe this gives an hint what went wrong during the first start.

Regarding max shutter speed: please tell me min/max shutter speed as well as min/max iso in Fairphone stock camera app of your FP5. Maybe I can do something (like I did for FP 4).

Cheers
Michael

Hi, I have removed as much Google from my phone as possible and dont have a Google Account on my phone… So if I can still send you logs somehow, I’m happy to do so. I see I can enable logging, and write errors in log files in settings? For sure after the last re-install its not crashing, while the 2 times before it happend, so seems to be not reproducible 100%.

Unfortunately Fairphone makes it difficult for third party Apps to access all sensor/camera2Api features…

Shutterspeed range: 1/8000 - 8 seconds (your app has 1/11000-1/4)

Iso range: 100-4300

I just notice that all pictures I take are just black once I set iso or shutter speed to “auto”

Thanks for the info, do you have another valid email address where we can communicate? I must ask a couple of questions regarding FP 5 and thats part of development process. Its about testing my code changes.

Will send you a PM here in the forum.

Yes its not solved, neither with recent beta 2.1.3 however its being worked on😊

ok good :+1:

I can also confirm this is not reproducible, I tried to get the crash while taking an adb logcat but it didn’t occurs neither:

  • after a FP5 shut down then start up.
  • after cleaning the app storage (to get it fresh)
  • after a desinstall and reinstall of the app

Hi @oli.sax can check if you have “Display always on” enabled? Its under the 3 dots in the settings. And do you have a Google Account added on the FP?

Hi Yvonne!

  • yes I have a google account linked, although it’s an “empty” one and not my main GMail address. Most of the google apps are deactivated too.
  • I guess I have not the “Always On Display” option enabled, tough I don’t find where to look at the “3 dots”??? Wasn’t AoD removed from FP5 with Android14?

Yes AoD doesnt exist any longer, the setting is a setting in the App.

Ah ok within the app

Yes I have it

I just tried the app and… yep, it still crashes the FP5. It’s stock os and even have a Google account

thanks for testing, as this confirms its not beta FPOS what was the idea. Weird as for some reason on the FP5 with normal (not beta) FPOS the developer had, it was not reproducible. So it will stay as it is, not perfect and still usable in my eyes.

Have tried out the app on my stock OS FP5 and it runs perfectly fine without crashing.
So I’ve no idea why but it doesn’t seem to affect all FP5 devices…
