Apps that work on e/OS

Hello, I don’t have a fairphone but really want to switch but have a few apps that i would like to confirm work on the e/os version before i make the switch. The most important one is the Dexcom G7 app as I have diabetes and wear a cgm. Does anyone know if it works? I have done a good amount of searching on the forum and on dexcom’s website but haven’t seen anything.

The others would be like discord, spotify, pokemongo, and libby. stuff i use daily and would like to maintain but could live without if needed.

Thanks!

Hello, I have a FP5 with e/os (Murena), and I looked up the Dexcom G7 app in the App Lounge, and I have found it. I have not installed it, since I use another glucose meter, but as far as I can see , it is in that app store.

Welcome to the community forum.

According to Aurora Store, an alternative client to the Google Play Store, this App requires Google background services on the phone.

/e/OS does its best to provide compatibility to this, and many Google-dependent Apps are indeed working fine on /e/OS, but there can be no guarantee, and compatibility may fail at any point in time for any amount of time, even if somebody right now could report the App as working on /e/OS.

I can only advise to not take a risk with health stuff this way.
Stick with the Google certified stock vendor Android OS instead, where you can take it up with the vendor if an App encouters an issue, and where the vendor likewise can take it up with Google if the cause of the issue is not something the vendor did or can fix.
There is no chain of obligation/ responsibility like this in the Android custom ROM realm which /e/OS is a part of. It’s best effort, and if best effort isn’t enough in some case, then that’s bad luck, there’s nothing more coming.

(Disclaimer: I’m using /e/OS and I’m pretty content with it, as I don’t have such a blocking use case currently.)

Okay thank you for this! I really want to degoogle if possible but if not am happy to just deal with it because obviously getting the health notifications is important and if they don’t come to my phone i;d have to carry an additional device which isnt ideal.

There are some important things you can do without resorting to alternative OSes.

To start with, it’s not mandatory to have a Google account even when using the stock Android OS, the OS itself will work just fine without one.
The respective setup step in the initial Android setup can be skipped, or an account already added can be removed in the Android settings later.

Certain Apps might require a Google account, though, Apps by Google themselves foremost.
But there’s a conscious choice to make of which Apps one wants to use for which purpose, mostly there are alternatives available to choose from.

Then there are a lot of default settings phoning home, but which can be altered. It’s worth to take some time to sift through the whole settings tree. It’s quite informative anyway.
