Android 14 is here. Here's what's changed - FP5.UT20.B.041.20240624

yeah… that sounds about right…

I personally would wait till the latest firmware is included in Custom ROMs. No one knows what they did to remove AoD. Calyx normally is fast with this and after FPOS A14 roll out it seems they removed latest version. They have a matrix channel, maybe ask them directly

That makes sense. Thanks.

Generally policy is to follow upstream for all things “cosmetic” (i.e. not security/privacy related), so by default Calyx would remove AoD as well.

However, other projects, most notably Lineage, may re-add support for things. The Calyx devs do frequently port changes like that over. For example, that’s how we got separate tiles for WiFi and mobile data after Google decided to get rid of them in favor of the unified internet tile.

The best thing you can do is ask and if you want a guaranteed reply/consideration, I’d suggest opening a ticket in the issue tracker.

And if you’re really serious, maybe go take a peek to check if someone has already brought this up in the Lineage community (although I’m not sure they have a generalized issue tracker, you might need to contact the folks working on the FP5 build specifically). Wouldn’t hurt to link to that thread in the Calyx ticket too.

Thanks for the detailed answer.
I am serious and I am used to tinkering with software, but I will need to find some time and patience to research what the actual differences between all these alternate OS are, how well they work with (for example) banking apps and who is (re)implementing what features. It’s all still a bit obscure to me.
Sounds like it’s worth to give it some time to settle anyway

Not having that NFC logo all the time is also great :tada:

Same here. Might as well go with Calyx as I can re-lock the bootloader. I don’t see how removing a feature is a fix to an issue.

just a thought.
it feels my battery is now running better than prior to the update.

would it then be possible that by removing AoD feature, the battery life got improved for everyone, even those (never) not using a feature?

Android 14 should use a bit less power by itself, and more aggressively pause background apps. This might be what you’re seeing.

Ironically I notice thermal issues and battery drain since A14  But it might be app related.

Thanks for sharing this document @jazzforlife, very interesting, full of data and even briefly mentioning the next phone. Out of curiosity, as this is the second document someone posts in socials that I was not able to find on my own (without a link I mean), are these part of internal documentation?

I have a F5 … but no update yet …

Me too, it is very odd

No, it ain‘t. As always it’s a staged rollout and some providers are later than others, with there approval.

So will we get a response about the AoD thing? Because this seriously seems to develop into a potential breaking point between company and community and the decision made here might have a severe impact.

Since support already answered (post 103 in this thread) and the message was

I personally don´t think that they will reconsider this decision or that a official response will be different from this one.

For me I really struggle with the absence of notifications - I don´t want to grab and unlock my phone every now and then to see if I got a message, call or mail. i was really angry when google killed notofication led, and I was deflated when I realized that AoD was bugged and had too much battery consumption in Android 13. I thought they would find a solution, but now, learning their solution is “we just remove the feature, but hey, now your battery lasts longer …” I am really pi**ed.

For me this decision, or more the way they (didn´t) communicate, will definitely influence my decision when I have to buy a new phone in a few years. My son got himself a Nothing Phone and I like that device, so maybe FP5 ist my last FP. Adding to this I was also affected when the support for the fingerprint sensor on FP3 was removed with the update.

You don’t need unlock, simply doubletap on lcd without unlocking…

I think you misunderstood me.
I don´t want to touch the phone at all!
It is placed on a far corner of my desk at work out of reach. I am allowed to use my phone, but not frequently all the time. And sometimes my gloves are full of residue - grease, oil, soldering flux - so I just want to SEE if there is a new message or notification without reaching out or touching the phone, because I would have to take off the gloves (and use a new pair …) or at least clean them everytime to check IF there are any new messages at all …
