Android 14 is here. Here's what's changed - FP5.UT20.B.041.20240624

Time to hit that “Contact support” button, I hope they can suggest some workarounds for missing always on display.

Flashing display is not it: it’s a notification, a distraction.

I want a way to check for pending notifications with minimal friction.

This App seem to work (not tested myself)

I’ve got the update now too and it seems snappy and bugfree to me. And each to his own, but I have never seen the point of AoD. I just pick up my phone and unlock it to see of I missed anything.

Thank you for the suggestion! I try to avoid apps with notifications access, it’s a juicy target for malicious activity. But if nothing else can help I’ll try one of those.

I also hope FP has some official answer better than “works for us, duh”.

CW: a rant incoming

Sorry for unloading all of this here, I know Fairphone Angels are getting heat for other people’s decisions. The following rant is not to you personally, it’s a statement of erosion of my trust for the brand.

I thought I was buying a phone meant for (well-off) ecologically conscious geeks. That’s what I’ve got from the marketing: repairable at home, responsibly sourced, unlockable bootloader, source-available Android distro, even a repair manual (which they announced like it was full schematics, but it’s still ok).

But it feels like I’ve got a wrong phone: there’s an easy to replace battery, but no charger I can buy for a spare. There’s a whole video where some a…ole from FP makes fun of people having problems with the FP5 (“Linus Fairphone reacts”, it’s on the official FP YouTube channel). Now I’m expected to find workarounds for a feature that I’ve been using, that they say they know I’ve been using, with no explanation why I can’t use it the way I used to.

I didn’t expect owning a phone to be this exhausting

I keep huffing the copium, and telling myself that all these dumb issues are an issue with stock android, and not fully fairphone’s doing or neglegence.
But like… They’re still responsible for the quality of the experience, and their lack of communication or acknowledgement of issues is indeed a huge blow.
At least the hardware is solid. Matter of time I get fed up and try Lineage, with the assumption that it’s just a more polished, better cared for, objectively better OS. At which point, I’ll go quiet on this forum, since FP has nothing to do with my daily software anymore, and for hardware issues I can bother support.

Doesn’t work unfortunately. I don’t know what they disabled to remove AOD but the feature is completely dead on FP5.

Already sent support ticket after a lot of hassle. (redirecting from one page to another)

This is also my last straw with this company. (after FP3 fingerprint sensor debuckle…)

If this is how they choose to do business. Then I’m taking my money elsewhere.

Someone in a german FB group reported that an App named Crypto Wake AOD works, the one I linked is the only I found with this name.

@Incanus, I’ve had AoD on devices with LCD displays. As an example, my LGE H840.

That’s quite unusual as it has a very high energy consumption. AoD makes only sense with OLED.

@Incanus, not if you have a battery pack. That smartphone had a replaceable battery too.

Would be nice, to have the option to choose AOD. Assuming, most of us are grownups and don´t need kindergarten rules.

As I remember, disabling the LED notification was decided by google to kill this feature.

I keep reading about new issues emerging due to the update, such as having to reset the phone, hardware not working, and other issues.

How long should I wait to ensure that all serious errors have been patched out before attempting to update?

Not sure where you read such? Despite small hicc-ups I didnt read anything about hardware not working or needing to reset?

Moving your post to the general topic.

As beta tester I use A14 since some time and havent seen any serious errors, however there is never a 100% guarantee to not hit any serious errors

I want either the AoD or my money back. A Phone that can’t notify me when i got a message is completely useless. I’m starting to regret getting a fairphone in the first place

Let’s be grateful that this forum and community exists.

Returning to FP, I remembered this forum and when I got the update to A14 notification, I wanted to get the feedback of the ones who made the update before I do.

Thanks to anyone sharing here and the community managers to make this possible.

Personally, I stay on A13 for now.

Energy consumption has always been more important to me than the AoD, so I was waiting for this bug to be fixed and had it turned off in the meantime. Therefore the A14 upgrade doesn’t make things worse for me and the update went really smooth and quick for me. Still, I remember the shock feeling that I had when I read about Fairphone’s “solution” to this issue, that’s ridiculous.

Please backup your phone before any major update.
There have been several cases of people reporting issues with the update, having to reboot the phone manually for example. My feeling is that most did not have any issue. For instance, in my case the update was very smooth and I hardly see any difference.
There have been two things I noticed, one - people regretful about the AOD. The second one, the shortcuts on the lockscreen ( see separate threads for that)

PSA: Check your alarm :alarm_clock: Volume after the update…

I had no audio in some apps (checked Chrome and Firefox) while others worked. After a second manual reboot this was fixed.

The alarm volume was set to zero.

hope it will be brand-new

Just wanted to put this here: removal of AoD seems to be limited to Fairphone OS. I’m on IodeOS and can still switch it on.

I don’t really use it, though, since I don’t allow access to notifications on a locked screen, so cannot comment on battery usage.
