The FP3 has Android 13 and still receives security updates, which is very good for a phone releases on September 2019. But it is very likely Google stops security patches for Android 13 soon if we look at the usual schedule.
I began to look at a solution that could keep my phone as safe as possible so I am thinking about installing /e/os or LineageOS. I was surprised to see that I cannot unlock my device without a code and that the solutions proposed in the forum years ago to do so does not work (and by the way the link explaining how to do on Murena website brings to nothing a page that does not exist anymore on Fairphone website). I was surprised the perl does not work for me.
I wonder if anybody knows what Fairphone will do when Google stops supporting Android 13. Will they offer an easy solution to switch to another OS ? Yes, I know it is not a good solution for selling me a new phone
There is already an easy solution to flash any custom ROM and the way this works will not change because Fairphone stops FPOS updates. You are free to choose what fits your needs.
Hi, could you please share the link that does not work?
From my perspective, there seems to be a lot of updated advise on the forum how to switch in a safe way (@piero-e amazing work on e/OS btw), but if there is something that does not work, it would be nice to sort that out
Judging from my limited experience, I would imagine it will be up to a user to choose the path they want to take…
Edited to say that perhaps we could advertise/organise the idea of helping people switch during local meetups? I for one would definitely enjoy that @urs_lesse what do you think?
Right now, I cannot activate “OEM unlocking” because I don’t have the “verify code" and the page in Fairphone where you could ask for it does not exist anymore.
So no, it is not easy to install another ROM like /e/os when you follow the instructions that require OEM unlocking.
Over on the /e/ forum, some regulars tend to blast it recently, but my own experience with using the web-based /e/OS Installer switching an Android OS 13 Fairphone 3 to /e/OS last year was very good. It seems to me others’ negative experiences with it were mostly with later Fairphone models.
The /e/os installer cannot work since it requires “OEM unlocking” in Developper options as said at the installation ( Enable OEM Unlocking On Fairphone Devices ). But the page mentionned in the item 3 does not work : the page does not exist anymore.
To me this just looks like outdated documentation but IMHO it isn’t really hard to find the new page from which to get the unlock code.
Of course I haven’t tried to use the unlock code. So there is a slight chance the process might fail even after finding the right page.
I moved my FP3 to /e/OS last December and the link on the FP3 install wiki by /e/OS was still working. @Alain_Guillet I hope you can install it now; maybe it would be worth to update the wiki page.
For another OS, I installed iodeOS on my FP3 a month ago. It is based on LineageOS and they have their own tweaks to it. It works pretty well, lots of customisation, and it comes with aurora store already installed, which can be practical.
It runs on android 15 so there will be updates for a while. I prefered to install iodeOS over LineageOS just because they have an installer, which makes it super easy to install it.
There is also ubuntu touch available for FP3 but haven’t tried it yet.
