Alternative OS on FP3 : Traditional Custom ROM or GSI ?

Hello,

I installed /e/ on my FP3 in September. By installing the “Zim Launcher” application found on F-Droid, the result is quite satisfactory.

In a few days, LineageOS 16.0 official for FP3 should be released.

The official Custom ROM /e/ for the FP3+ should be available in a few weeks. Likewise, we will have to wait a little longer for LineageOS 16.0 official for FP3+.

To my knowledge, there is currently no other specific Custom ROM available for the FP3.

However, thanks to GSI, there are dozens of other testable ROMs on the FP3.
How to flash a custom ROM on FP3 with GSI

I have not tested installing a GSI ROM.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of GSI ROMs over traditional Custom ROMs?

Cependant, il existe grâce aux GSI des dizaines d’autres ROM testables sur le FP3

I think an important difference is in the firmware updates.

Firmware update is necessary, for example, when the FP3 is transformed into an FP3 +. It is made during the OTA update with the original ROM of FairePhone.

A maintainer can include these updates in their traditional custom ROM.

A GSI ROM cannot include this kind of update. If they are essential, it will be necessary to reinstall the last original FP3 ROM, then install the GSI ROM again.

Je pense qu’une différence importante se situe au niveau des mises à jour des firmwares.

La mise à jour des firmwares est par exemple nécessaire lorsque le FP3 est transformé en FP3+.
Elle est faite lors de la mise à jours OTA avec la ROM originale de FairePhone.

Un mainteneur peut inclure ces mises à jour dans sa custom ROM traditionnelle.

Une ROM GSI ne peut pas inclure ce genre de mise à jour. Si elles sont indispensables, il faudra réinstaller la dernière ROM originale du FP3, puis installer à nouveau la ROM GSI.

To put it simple: GSI is only meant to be used for app development / testing, not for productive devices. Or, in Google’s own words

GSI includes core system functionalities in all devices running Android 9 and above; in other words, GSI does not include device manufacturers’s customizations. You might encounter behavioral differences
