I’ve always found folding phones pretty dang interesting technically (they unlock a bunch of potential use cases that are hard to accomplish any other way), but their lack of repairability always rubbed me the wrong way. This is a bit of a long-term wishlist item, but if (and only if!) Fairphone was able to figure out how to make one decently repairable (especially around the inner screen), I would be very interested. Doubly so if you could dock it and get a desktop mode on an even larger screen if you wanted to.
I’m sure this is a difficult task, but I figured if any phone manufacturer might pursue this, it’d be Fairphone
I feel like the Z Fold 8 and the iPhone Duo have hit on a pretty good aspect ratio for a foldable (passport-sized when closed), so that’d be my pick.
@jfred I think a truly repairable foldable is YEARS away, since anyone who already has something in their line up and anyone who “revolutionary” goes to market 6 years later has to make so many consumer-unfriendly choices to be able to present a design that classifies as a smartphone, not a laptop with a SIM card
What I find actually most interesting in Apple’s foldable is the option to (literally manually) set an individual angle for the fold (roughly like you can on a laptop computer). I can imagine countless potential usages for that, e.g. setting it to like 90° to allow taking (group) pictures with the main camera on delayed trigger. I guess though that Apple’s is not the first foldable to allow this, is it?
My previous daily driver was a Surface Duo 2. I loved to have two separate screens. In my opinion no need to have a foldable screen. But two screens next to each other: yes please!. If the usb-c of the FP6 would have been ‘better’ I already would have had a separate screen connected to it.
