Which networks in the UK support WiFi calling on the FP5?
I’ve used Giffgaff (which is on the O2) network for years and WiFi calling just worked, but out of the home the signal is nonexistent where I live so I switched to Spusu (which is on the EE network).
I assumed WiFi calling would just work but it doesn’t and I spoke to Spusu and they said they won’t support this phone and told me to simply find another mobile network.
So I’m looking for people who are on a network (not O2 based) in the UK which they know supports WiFi calling on the FP5.
Additionally:
Apparently Spusu support the FP4, does anyone know why there would be a difference? Surely this is standard stuff?
Does anyone know if WiFi calling capabilities are defined by the host network eg O2 or if the sub networks eg Giffgaff are in control of that themselves? Someone on here suggested Ecotalk might work but that’s run on top of EE just like Spusu is.
Where in UK are you? I use EE in rural Suffolk and it is ok (ISH) sometimes I have to move around the house to get the best for both caller and receiver. We are on a hybrid broadband, fibre to copper.
I’m in rural Devon. The EE signal outside is great and not bad indoors apart from in my office where it’s terrible most of the time. If WiFi calling worked it wouldn’t be a problem but currently I miss calls. I’m guess if you have to move around the house to get a good signal WiFi calling isn’t working for you either.
It worked great on Giffgaff at home, but after leaving home I had 8 miles with no signal before reaching the nearest town which seemed pretty dumb.
I wish Android made it more obvious when WiFi calling was enabled but not working. It seems you can prove it by putting on airplane mode and then enabling WiFi and trying to make a call but unless you test it you don’t know.
Totally agree on when WiFi is working and one is not on data roaming, I now check regularly throughout the day. 2 members of my family cannot bring work with them when visiting, WiFi not quick or good (ping numbers?) enough. Are you on hybrid broadband or fibre? WhatsApp is occasionally the only way for us, though a last resort.
If I say what icon it answers your question. Unless I am missing something there is no obvious way to turn on/off and check it’s status, other than checking internet via settings.
I dont think I understand what you say. There is an icon in the status bar indicating when Wifi-Calling is active (search for this icon in the internet to see what I mean). This means when you dont see it, WifiCalling isnt active/working even if you enabled it in the settings and even if wifi reception is good. And sure there is a quick setting for wifi calling. Also there are, depending on the provider, Wifi-Calling subsettings that might help.
@PeterJ, likewise; I live in a very rural part of NFK too, and VoWLAN isn’t consistently applied, even with modern IEEE 802.11ac-2013 equipment. However, like when a cellular connection doesn’t work, re-enabling it[1] frequently remediates this for me.
Thanks for reminding me about that icon. I’d forgotten it was a thing. But that’s sort of my point. You can turn on WiFi calling but you get zero feedback that it’s not working until you try to make a call.
But I’m not really complaining about that, I was just hoping for some suggestions for networks in the UK where WiFi calling works with the FP5.
Yes. I checked the forum. I found a reference suggesting Ecotalk (which is based on EE) worked in the UK but it wasn’t super explicit. I couldn’t find anything else. I may just have to give them some cash and try them.
I have set “call over WiFi" and the same for roaming. I can’t see any other sub settings.
Spusu told me it won’t work and they won’t fix it. They claim to support the FP4 though. I can’t fathom why they even get to choose like that. Why isn’t it just a standard which either works or doesn’t? But perhaps that’s too philosophical a question.
You said they appear unreliable in AU so that’s a good reason just to give up on them. Thanks for the advice!
Thanks for the reply, you understood and answered with useful information. My word salads are an expression of my dyslexia, it always makes sense to me?!?
Agreed, I am on EE and it works fine. I do though have to regularly throughout the day check I have not been dropped by the broadband (hybrid) and therefore on data roaming.
Thanks for the suggestions. I actually signed up for 1pmobile who are based on EE and it seems WiFi calling is working fine. I guess Spusu are just rubbish. I couldn’t stomach the cost of EE for my usage (£22 for 5Gb Vs £6 for 4Gb) although the name 1pmobile was almost enough to put me off.
I am with Ecotalk using EE network and WiFi calling works fine. (Better since start of year when our connection went to fibre from bored band. (Very bored when uploading 2.5GB files!)
