Wifi calling crashes FP3

After discussing his VoIP setup with a friend who uses Wifi Calling on his FP3 I enabled that on mine.

This sent my FP3 in a crash loop which seems to be caused by the Telephone app. I managed to turn WLAN off, but that did not help. The phone displays a notice that emergency calls require WLAN which is removed after a few seconds. Hitting the buttons does not help. The pop up is displayed three times, the it pauses and starts again. After some repetitions the phone rebooted, even though it says it will shut down. Then the bootstrap complains (in German, don’t trust my translation to be literally correct) that the Android system could not be started. It gives me the option to reset to factory or try again. So far I did not reset.

I can enter the system settings, then Netzwerk und Internet. I can’t enter Anrufe und SMS. It is disabled, which also points to the Android phone services.

I’m desperately looking for a way to terminate this reset loop without resetting to factory.

Update:
I had to charge the FP3, all those resets cost a lot of power. The I removed the DW Kontakte & Telefon & SMS App I’m using. That did not help. But removing the SIM did. But it did not help with switching of Wifi Calling. That requires an active SIM. :frowning: I’m still trying to catch that tiny moment when the SIM data page with the Wifi Calling toggle is displayed to turn it off.

To begin with, I would remove the SIM.

Boot the phone and if possible, make sure your data are properly backed up. From there you can perform a factory reset with less trepidation.

Thanks. As you can see I did that after I had recharged the phone and it indeed helped.

I made a backup of the stuff on the internal flash and reset to factory. After a lot of experimentation doing ever smaller portionts of the setup I found out that the reset loop is triggered after the first reboot after the basic installation. No apps yet.

I’m beginning to suspect that something in the hardware is broken that is only relevant to Wifi Calling. Strange as that sounds.

Here is how I got rid of the Wifi Call setting (my translation from German, probably inaccurate)

  1. Do a Factory Reset
  2. When it is complete, enter Settings → Network and Internet
  3. Enter either Calls & SMS or SIM-Cards
  4. Toggle Wi-Fi Calling to off

After that I could continue with the setup without interference.

I would still like to be able to use Wifi Calling, so I’ll open a support call for that.

I opened a ticket, got a receipt. Here is the URL that should lead to the ticket:
https://support.fairphone.com/hc/requests/1200805

But, alas, it does not work for me. I just get the support page, logged in or not. Maybe it works for somebody in this forum. :frowning:

Someone else cant look at your ticket. Best is to contact via their online chat on Monday

Thanks, Yvonne! I didn’t know that.

I tried again with this account and a spare account I created long ago because of problems with the shop. No dice. The receipt for the ticket went to this account, so I didn’t expect otherwise.

I’ll try the online chat on Monday as you suggested.

After some back and forth Fairphone found that I’m using Vodafone DE which does not support Wifi Calling. Why that crashes the phone was not addressed.

I asked them to find a fix for this behaviour. I first spent hours trying to catch the monent the toggle can be made visible and finally gave upo because the toggle is at the end of the SIM card configuration page.

The I spent even more hours restoring the configuration of the many apps I have installed.

All in all a very frustrating experience. Apparently there is a support article VoLTE & VoWi-Fi. Haven’t tried to locate that yet.

DE=Germany? And what do they mean with not supported? I use it with a Wetell SIM (Vodafone Network) in my FP4 and why should the FP3 not be supported?

It’s not in the supported list for the Fairphone 3/3+ in the support article, for Germany only O2 is, which is kind of a puzzling choice, as Telekom and Vodafone are bigger providers than O2 here.

I’m with Telekom, and VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling are working fine for me on my Fairphone 3. But not being officially supported obviously doesn’t mean it couldn’t work :person_shrugging: .

Well thats indeed weird, didnt VF sell the FP3? However VF will not do anything to change that…

I’ve created a new topic Does anybody have a reset loop after enabling Wifi Calling? to collect data on this problem.

Please add your experiences with Wifi Calling there.
