Don’t know if this is the rigt place to ask as I have no issues yet with the FP6 /e/OS that Iwant to buy ![]()
What would be the best place to buy? Price is the same at Fiarphone and Murena, so most important issue could be service? Any experience/advice would be appreciated.
I bought my last FP5 directly from Murena.
Mainly for convenience sake, since I didn’t want to spend the time to set up eOS myself.
Since all went well until now, I have no experience with Murena’s service and support.
But following the threads in this forum about Fairphone’s (lack of) support, Murena might be the safer bet.
Perhaps check as well for experiences in the Murena forum https://community.e.foundation/
following on that
- in terms of receiving the support for e/OS software, it seems to me you will end up communicating with Murena anyway, please search the forum for cases like that
https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/14487777708946-Warranty-with-an-Alternative-OS
- for (simple) hardware issues, there is now a FP self-repair portal which accelerates the troubleshooting
FP is running now a BF promo where you can get a free case and a screenprotector, plus you can get future discounts using your Keep Club points, and it has a cheaper shipping
Still all of that might be irrelevant if you run into support issues.
One consideration that might favour buying from Fairphone:
If you buy from Murena and at one point need or want to switch the operating system away from /e/OS, the Murena terms don’t really leave any room for interpretation:
Can I revert to Google stock Android?
Technically yes, but note that this will void your warranty and support with us.
At Fairphone, it seems to me that you would be allowed to switch (both ways: /e/OS –> Android OS as well as Android OS –> /e/OS), as point 6.3. of Fairphone’s legal smallprint suggests:
If Your Product is operating on a third-party operating system (OS), please contact the software provider for any queries. In case You want Your Product to be covered by this Warranty nonetheless, We will require You to revert back or switch to Fairphone OS. This Warranty covers only the Product as provided by Us and, unless the Third Party Operating System is removed, it will not be possible for Us to assess whether the defect is caused by the Product hardware or by the Third Party Operating System.
Actually, as Fairphone is selling the FP6 with /e/OS installed and the FP6 with Android OS (“regular” version) and supports both, I would think they might not insist on “switching” back to any of these two as long as what you install is either /e/OS (“official” version with locked bootloader) or Android OS.
So in conclusion:
- Murena says switching to any OS other than /e/OS voids the warranty and does not consider the option that you switch it back to /e/OS. Full-stop.
- In contrast, Fairphone’s terms are much more liberal here.
For any warranty claim to be processed by Fairphone, the device must first be restored to the standard Android OS. Exceptions to this rule are only for devices that were bought with /e/OS pre-installed by Fairphone or Murena, in which case you do not have to install Android.
Thanks for the useful ocnsiderations. Support for /e/OS is most important for me, coming from iOS. Fairphone AI’s assistent informed about the support by the Murena team at Fairphone, so that seems a best of both worlds.
Thats an interesting find and I think new. In the past there was no distinction between e/OS and other Custom ROM in this regard.
