USB tether not working on Mac

I tried using USB tether on my Mac today, but my Mac never lists it as a network device. I’ve activated usb tethering from the usb menu on my Fairphone 6. This works fine with my wife’s Samsung S21.

Does anyone here have usb-tethering working on their Fairphone 6 running FP6.QREL.15.176.0?

USB tethering certainly works with my FP6 though I’m not running the same FPOS version as you.

Just a few ideas.

  1. Have you successfully tethered any other computer to your FP6 over USB?
  2. Does your APN “type” field include “dun”?
  3. Check that your mobile subscription is valid for mobile hotspot / tethering.
  4. Try using a different port on the Mac.
  5. I seem to remember that in some cases when the phone doesn’t appear in the Mac’s list of network interfaces it’s possible to add it using the [+] button.

Tried most of your suggestions. One thing I noticed is that dun is not active, and I can’t activate it either. It’s grayed out, even when I try and create a new APN. I spoke with my carrier, and this is not a block from their side. My wife has the same carrier, and she has dun on her Samsung S21. Wifi hotspot does work ok on my Fairphone.

Maybe not intentional but to me this sounds like a possible misconfiguration somewhere in their systems, perhaps related to the model.

Have you tried
Settings > System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings

Just out of interest you might try swapping in her SIM if it’s a hard card.

That’s a good suggestion. I think I’ll try that first.

I have an esim, which has caused a number of issues already. So I requested a physical sim from my operator to see if that helps at all.

The reset of mobile network settings should be painless, not like the complete radio reset we used to have to do that wiped Wi-Fi passwords and BT pairings. That’s a great improvement with A15 and is certainly worth trying I’d say.

I tried resetting network settings and also switching to a physical SIM. My physical SIM is able to do usb-internett on my wifes Samsung. One major difference is that my wifes Samsung recieves APN settings automtically from the carrier, which my Fairphone doesn’t. So I’m guessing there is some sort of configuration not happening on my Fairphone.

To my mind these two points are incompatible. If your phone is not receiving APN settings automatically then you should be able to modify them manually.

As I’ve said before, this sounds like a misconfiguration or omission on the part of your network operator.
