I connect cable to computer and phone, swipe down from top of screen and select file transfer. The solid dot moves to file transfer for 2 seconds then moves back to no data transfer. The same happens with PTP. I have USB debugging enabled. Is there something obvious I am missing?
Computer is running Ubuntu26.04LTS. I have now set USB to automagically select file transfer when connected but still nothing showing in file manager on computer and Shotwell, the program I use to manage my photos does not show my FP6 All works normally on my old FP3.
I guess the next check is to try it on a Windows machine. (It is now 26 years since I defenstrated!)
Yes, I have that set. I have tried on a Windows laptop now and it works as expected. Old FP3 works exactly as expected. I have tried several cables including FP ones and they make no difference. I suspect some software glitch between XUbuntu26.04 and Android16. I didn’t try it before upgrading from 15 to see if it was an issue then.

Why bother with USB? Why don’t you try “KDE Connect” in your WLAN? Works flawlessly with my Linux Mint and MX Linux installations. Or try “Warpinator”.
@Dave_Jackson I’m running LMDE 7; when connecting my FB6 to my laptop for the first time, I first had to approve the connection on my phone (a small window pops up asking for permission to allow this USB connection).
Doesn’t it related to USB debugging ADB ?
I use Kubuntu (still on 24.04 though) and it works with Android 16. I don’t get any popup when I plug in, I have to go into settings->devices->USB to select file transfer mode, but then it’s fine, I can see the shared storage and my SD card as a normal mounted directory.
Thank you. That is what I did with my FP3 and tried with my FP6 without success. I have now installed Cx File Explorer on the phone and that is letting me see folders both on phone and on sd card as I did via cable on my old phone. It is a bit slower than the wired connection but except when I want to transfer a video going into GB that doesn’t make much difference.
Despite having found a work around, I am still interested in finding out why, it should work normally with Windows and not with Xubuntu. I have seen on other fora that a lot of people have had issues with the connection dropping out on various android phones. It has never been an issue for me before. Six years with FP3 it always just worked.

But as another poster mentioned, KdeConnect is really good and operates over WiFi, and has loads of other useful functions. Although originally written for KDE on the desktop it can be installed on any flavour of Ubuntu. Check it out!
Give Cx explorer works well over wifi, I don’t really need to add the KDE libs that that option installs as dependencies. I will carry on as I am, testing from time to time to see if any software updates on phone or ubuntu sort it out.
yeah, it is - as I wrote the FIRST time to connect I needed to allow on phone. You can check with adb in terminal with phone connected if it is listed (adb devices) as “known” device for your laptop. Thus worked for me.
Then it works as described; if not it’s a bug as you fear.
in setting of phone you can opt-in to appear a popup for switching the USB-way, that is a different pop-up.
Latest update on computer, it now works so no need to use Cx file explorer. Good to have that as a fall back option though.
