To me that is a workaround not a solution. Basically as I have found the square is not visible, but is operational. I need to do some more testing with the new /e/OS4 to see whether it is still the case. I do not consider learning to use gestures because buttons are not working as solved. FP need to work to fix the original issue.
There are two different types of navigation, by gestures or by buttons. Natively by Android (gestures added a few years back).
They are both available for the stock OS from Fairphone.
If /e broke something about this navigation in /e/OS, please contact /e about it to have it fixed.

For my FP6 running /e/OS4 the square button is in place. I do not know whether that is the case for the OP. If the OP still has an issue then as you say it needs addressing by Murena. However calling it solved because a google workaround is to learn how to use gestures is not correct. If something that should work is not working it needs fixing, not taking away and using a different system. Personally have found previously the same as the OP, the button was not visible, however touching the screen in its location worked so for me was not too big an issue, if on the other hand I had to go to using gestures that would be a major deal. This is bit like microsoft fixing all the W10 issues by forcing W11 on everyone.

I think there is a bit of misunderstanding.
The user wanted to use a 3-button navigation (that is my preference as well) and was guided (successfully I refer) how to find the setting.
I hear that this setting is not working for you - on a different OS. As @janweiss mentioned, it calls for a different topic and possibly contacting Murena.
