Update went well
Update available but failed to download or install
Just installed the update. The installation process went smooth as usual, but yanky animations in the latest version have degraded the user experience.
The animation to switch between different views (single app, card view, switch to home screen view) are stuttery and slow, as is the new “un-blur” effect when unlocking the phone using the fingerprint sensor. Animations within apps (e.g. scrolling) remain smooth, which makes me suspect this isn’t an issue with the graphics driver but rather with the launcher.
As one piece of the puzzle, I notice there are some new visual effects with this update. When switching from an app to the card view of open apps, there is a blurring effect on the background and on the card displaying the current app.
As for my phone: it’s an 8GiB RAM, 256GiB storage FP4. Developer options were disabled, but I did just enable them and found that disabling “vervagen op vensterniveau toestaan” (allow blurring at window level) removes the jitter. However, I have at least one app that refuses to start when developer options are enabled, so this is not a permanent solution to the performance issue.
I just updated my fp4 and I find myself like you, the animations when switching between apps or minimizing feels very laggy. Within the applications there are no performance problems, it’s just doing that in the launcher.
Same issues noticed on my phone.
None of the described changes in the list should have caused this, so something different was updated too (the launcher?).
Sad that this did not pop up while (beta) testing.. Or maybe the time run out and they wanted to push the update.
Good thinking. Can somebody having installed this update enter Settings/System/Developer Options, scroll all the way down (bottom third) to the “Window/Transition/Animator duration” scales, and check the values shown there?
(On mine, still on FP4.SREL.15.19.2, all three items are at “1”.)
I can also confirm that the current window is always blurred in the app switcher and that disabling “Allow window-level blurs” makes the super laggy (after update) app switcher super fast.
Additionally I am experiencing very fast battery drain since the update.
As RSpliet mentioned, disable (in German) “Weichzeichnen auf Fensterebene zulassen” in Developer-Options.
Unfortionally Developer-Options have to stay enabled, otherwise this setting falls back to default “enabled” .
I just realized something else, if I recieve a voice message via WhatsApp and I want to hear it through the top speaker, there are 3 “pops” before it plays it properly.
That’s not really a problem, is it? Developer Options have been constantly enabled on all my phones since this feature exists. The only danger is if somebody messes around with unknown options and breaks something, simply having it enabled is no issue AFAIK.
Not using WhatsApp, but I call daily my family using Signal (it’s the same underlying engine AFAIK), and I have all kind of strange noises. I assume those are compression/decompression artifacts due to packet loss or some such. Annoying, but well, they come with the territory.
As I mentioned before, I have at least one app that refuses to start when developer options are enabled. An IMHO paranoid banking app, but that’s not something I can change. So yes, keeping them enabled can be problematic.
For now I didn’t notice weird sounds during calls, my problem is with voice messages in chat apps (I just tested with WhatsApp and Telegram, the problem can be replicated in both).
