Signal video/voice calls over WiFi latency

For quite some time I’m struggling with Signal calls when using WiFi. It works fine when using 5G. So you might think, it’s your WiFi at home. But when I do the Signal call on my laptop, the latency of about 1-2 seconds is gone.

So if it’s not the network, it may be the device. Do others also experience issues when calling someone over WiFi on your Fairphone 5?

Some speed/latency tests:

I had no issue with voice calls using my WiFi, does this happen to you specifically with video calls? (I personally don’t think video is necessary for a call so I just don’t have videocalls with others)

It happens to both video and voice. You experience no noticeable latency? There is a huge difference between calling with my phone or with my laptop. I don’t have this issue with Whatsapp or Teams. The combination of Signal, WiFi and Fairphone seems to be it for me.

It seems that the FP5 is hit bad by buffer bloat. I experience this also

I have this same issue. I primarily use Signal. - I’m on latest version of the app (7.41.3) but have had this for a while (so before that latest version was released.)

Other details

  • Fairphone 5 5G
  • Dutch phone number
  • Android version 14

Is it the exact same issue? On 5G it works fine but not on WiFi?

@UPPERCASE - Yup, that’s right. It seems like, also, if I start on wifi then go outside (so it switches to data) the delay remains there too.

I still have to try a Signal call on a different WiFi network. But I’ll also try to start a call on WiFi and then switch to 5G. I think I did that before already and on 5G it worked perfectly fine.

It seems like the issue for me has gotten a lot better. Seems entirely resolved from what I can tell. Any better on your side?

Since the latest update that was released a few days ago? I haven’t tested it yet.

Indeed! Since this latest update it seems much better. Let’s hope it doesn’t digress again.

I’m still having this same issue. I thought it was resolved but it is actually still happening pretty consistently. @UPPERCASE or @Furdiburd - are either of you still experiencing the issue?

I was not last time I used my FP5. But my FP5 is going back to its owner (my employer). I got a FP6 for company internal testing.

Hello pl forgive if I don’t post with normal conventions - I don’t often do it. The system says the issue is solved - I’m not sure it is. I also seem to have substantial latency lags using Signal
