The Samsung was standard Android. It was a Note 3 and actually was still working fine. Getting under the Google radar is what appealed to me, as well as the increasing number of incompatible apps.

/e/OS is available for a range of Note 3s (detailed models supported are given when you hover over or follow the different “Galaxy Note 3” links in the device list, so if your Note 3 is one of the supported models and if you feel adventurous enough to try, you could find out whether the issue is the fault of /e/OS rather than the phone … and you could have your still working Note 3 degoogled 
, although only the LTE models listed with /e/OS R will have a future with security updates.
I installed both apps but couldn’t see how to sync the contacts. However, I found this article and following it worked for me!
