Did you hear about salt battery.
I see drill with salt battery sold in supermarket or DIY store. But nothing for mobile industry. Do you know why ?
Are you referring to sodium ion?
(Assuming we’re talking about sodium-ion, Na-ion)
This is still pretty new technology and for mobiles it’s the high-end energy density, power / weight ratio and discharge cycles that are required. So this will take time, but it’s looking hopeful, from what I have read.
I just hope companies and countries with a vested interest in Li don’t try to get in the way.
Comparing sodium ion to lithium ion:
Pros:
- Is considered safer
- Should be cheaper to produce, given that sodium is much more abundant than lithium, and can be easily obtained from sea water
- Has a wider operating temperature range
- Can be charged faster
Cons:
- Has roughly half the energy density per given volume
A process which can at the same time produce fresh water, a commodity that’s increasingly in short supply. Double gain?
