Requesting tips on better night time photography

Hello from the US. Two questions today regarding photography:

  1. What can I do to take better night time photography? Last night the northern lights exploded across the sky, visible even from the city. My feeds are flooded with great pictures people took of the beauty of the aurora borealis, yet when I look at my pictures, they look like a rice dish, which is to say very grainy. What can I do to amplify my picture taking in super low light settings. I will fully admit I missed the pro settings and did not make use of the full exposure available, though that only looks to be for a half second at max. I did use the super night preset, which made the attached photo.

  2. How does the fairphone 6 camera compare to the 4? I saw on this other post that the 6’s camera is a slight step down from the 5, though it seems to argue that it isn’t worse. Does anyone have a review or gallery I can look at to compare them? Any technical reviews?

Hi @strongthany I would say that, in general, keeping a mobile phone as still as possible when taking a picture.

If you are using the pro settings (I am not sure which options are available on FP4) try a high shutter speed (like you mentioned) while keeping the phone imobile. I usually also turn on the timer so I get a few seconds to secure the phone against a wall or an object. That way it stays still from start to finish.

Another thing that might help is to set the ISO (another Pro setting) as low as possible, while still getting an image that is brigh enough, to minimize graininess.

One last option is a little bit of editing for noise reduction.
