Hi all,
Briefly, I’m wondering to what extent it could be possible (and how much effort might be required) to purposefully make custom builds of an OS that remove features and functionality? The goal would be to achieve outcomes ranging from a minimally functional phone that can make and receive calls and text messages but do little if anything else, up to a phone that has a limited set of installed apps and can run only those apps (but with full functionality). I’m thinking that this problem may have been encountered in reverse by those of you who have worked on creating the first functional builds of an OS for one of the Fairphones.
Why? My oldest child is approaching an age at which it could make sense for him to have a phone, but I’m not thrilled with the functionality of the parental controls offered by either stock android or iOS. I’d prefer to give him a phone with limited functionality and then add features as he demonstrates that he is mature enough to use it responsibly rather than buy a progression of different devices like the gizmo watch or bark phone that might not actually provide the types of features/functionality and controls that really make sense.
For context, I have a CS degree and lots of software development experience but no experience with software development for mobile devices.
Thanks!
