Possible release date for the Fairphone 6 & rumors

I usually have Fennec (with 60-100 Tabs), Thunderbird, Threema, Instagram and often also a game open at once. What I experience is timeouts in the game when switching to another app for to long, but hardly any restarts. I am on a FP4 with 8GB and FPOS (which is slightly debloated).
So yeah, some people might have some app that eats RAM, but I wouldn’t call myself a light user.

Just noticed, the fp6 on the images seems to be having the same “recessed” main button as the fp5 (which can be very sensitive and prone to double clicking), so it will probably have the fingerprint senspr on it too

I had an email from Fair phone recently and seemed to hint of the new Fairphone being released soon.

Her Majesty Queen Maxima of the Netherlands graced us with her presence towards the end of the month, to see first-hand the work that we’re doing. We’re quite convinced she left our premises with firm plans to make the switch to fair very, VERY soon.

I’m assuming she is waiting for the Fairphone 6.

What do you think.

Careful with this message: The Fairphone 5 was also touted as being modular by a lot of reviews. In the end, that meant only repairable, not upgradable.

Fairphone hinted even with the fairphone 5 marketing that device has a “modular design”: https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/18744611991825-Fairphone-5-Replace-a-Spare-Part

So another reason why the FP6 could have the same situation

I wonder what will be the redeeming quality of the fp6. On the pictures it looks so much like a 5. Stronger more efficienter cpu and that’s it? The 5 had the oled screen. What could this have that people might want?

What does other brands phones every year have what people want? A bit better something I would say, like for the FPs. No new phone has something really new in my eyes.

Something many people hope for is working AOD I guess and further improved Camera Software

Not sure we want to repeat the list long of wishes exentsively discussed over and over again

I don’t think it’s the phone to tempt FP5 users.
I remember vaguely some interviews saying not to expect radical changes.

Given it is said/rumoured to be significantly cheaper than FP5 at its launch, I would also not expect lots of new inventions - a simple reliable phone, repairable with longer software updates.

If someone wants to keep their phone for long(er), FP5 officially supported for six more years might not be the best choice.

I just wonder how that might impact FP5 sales.

The new shape would suffice to tempt me. And I am curious about the “cloud white” look. But I still have my FP3 …

And now excuse me, I have to go to church and confess my sinful desires … oh no, I am not even baptized

Fairphone’s strategy so far has been to deliver entry-level phones at a premium price. The excuse was that this is meant to be the phone for “normal people,” not enthusiasts. Over time, this strategy will probably work as there are not that many extra features that can be added to phones in a few years. Unfortunately, we are not quite there yet and I think they misread their users - enthusiasts who’d be willing to pay another 2-300 Euros to get a flagship device instead.
I currently have a FP4 and I’m looking forward to replace it with a more up-to-date phone. If the lower price means that the camera and battery will fall even further beyond today’s flagship phones, then I’ll have to go look somewhere else. Sorry, the kids are only young once and a replaceable battery is not good enough a reason accept that all baby photos are going to be grainy.

I hope that that “modular design” they talk about so much for the FP6 means that you can get an entry level FP6 for 549 but that better cameras are available at a higher price point.

The Fairphone has one of the best sensors available, but the software part is hard, as even the best sensors are bad. Only the software messes around with the pictures until they seem good. Since Apple, Google and Samsung do their fakery with pictures since years, Fairphone will never catch up.

If you love your kids, buy a real camera!

The price. It’s cheaper than the FP5 was.

You forget that Fairphone’s problem isn’t to sell new phones to existing customers (even more difficult for them, they should not want us to ), their goal is to expand, so reach new people.

Almost everyone I have recommended Fairphone to as a brand was taken aback by the price. My partner currently has an iPhone SE, she would not pay €700 for a phone anytime soon.

I really hope the €550 price label is true, and that they just stick to upgrading some key parts like the processor.

I’m sorry to be blunt, but I find this caracterization appalling.
Fairphone’s strategy is to deliver repairable phones at the fair price. Don’t base your expectations over products of exploitation, hidden costs, and state subvention.
Yes it’s more expensive than a phone with similar specifications and performance, but it’s not about that, is it?
So did they, misread the users? I see two groups: people who want to be ethical consumers, and people who want to tinker and repair their phone easily. These are not necessarily the same people. Enthousiasts who’d rather have a flagship, well, they bought the flagship already, or they have a oneplus or something. They don’t care about lifecycle, or replaceable battery, or mining conditions.

The kid’s photos argument is laughable. We’ve only been able to photograph kids with our phones for 20 years. That means that other means of keeping memories are worthless? “Grainy” photos do not inspire the same emotions? In this age of overwhelming and omnipresent images, aren’t all photos just plain in their banality and overuse?
This is utter and complete instagram brainrot. I concede that FP photos are not as good as others, but come on. If you are serious about photos, get an EOS.

Modular is just about the idea of replaceable modules. Doesn’t necessarily mean they’re better or different, even if that would be nice. This is not fake advertising, it really does exist. It’s late-stage capitalism that makes you think Base/Pro/Plus package.

Hey,
not sure if this post is meant as trolling, but of course times have changed over 20 years. I have an EOS, of course, but as anyone with small kids in 2025 will know, the camera is seldom close by when things happen spontaneously - the phone is. Sure, 150 years ago people would maybe have one portrait painted during all their life and that was what there was for memory. That’s not a viable alternative in 2025. People want what is available nowadays which is good looking photographs, even if taken at 4pm during Scandinavian Christmas without having to plan in advance to bring a huge camera along.

I just think Fairphone completely misunderstood its initial users (the overwhelming majority of them at least). They should have increased the price even a bit more to then be able to deliver a really good phone rather than try to be cheap and sell a phone at a price too high for casual users and too bad image quality for anyone who really cares about them. (At least that was the case with the FP3/4). Tesla understood its initial users much better in this sense.

I also don’t get why you would think that people who care about sustainability aren’t interested in photo quality. Quite on the contrary, I would say that 99.999% of those who don’t care about photo quality will buy a cheap 200 Euro phone from any brand. They can even buy a used phone from 5 years ago and be fine with that. Not sure what the point is of getting a Fairphone. Those who do care about the technical details will be likely willing to pony up larger sums if it means that the phone can fully replace any other phone.

That is obviously different in other markets, but given that Fairphone is mainly marketed toward Western Europe, I don’t see the point.

Anyway, I am still holding off updating my FP4. If the FP6 provides an Ok camera setup, that will be my next phone. Otherwise, I’ll have to rethink my priorities.

Given that I am unsure if the previous post was meant as a troll post, I won’t be posting further in this thread regarding this.

Those who are interested in Fairphone smartphones are those who are interested in societal, ecological and ethical issues. It’s simply impossible for a Fairphone to have the same price as another brand for the same specifications. Unless you use companies that exploit children in mines or Uighurs, or pay their employees less. All at a price.

Of course I’d like to have the camera of the latest Pixel or iPhone in the next Fairphone 6 I buy, with the technology that goes with it, of course. But is it worth it for all the issues mentioned above?

I’m glad there are alternatives like Fairphone, Framework (for computers) where, in addition to having a device that’s repairable and lasts over time, you get the chance to set up an open-source, free OS that gives less or no data to all the web giants who make their money off our backs.

It’s not all perfect, on the contrary, but it’s still better than nothing.

I have 2 small children, and before taking pictures of them with my smartphone, I take pictures of them with my eyes. I’d much rather live in the moment than be systematically waiting to pull out my smartphone and take their picture. That said, I’ve bought myself a digital camera so I’m less reliant on my smartphone.

They should get a truly present and available after-sales service. That would be a good start before releasing another device :relieved:

What pays for that if not continuing phone sales?
And how to keep up phone sales with Fairphone owners supposedly keeping their devices longer and a large number of other potential customers expertly trained in considering yesteryear’s phones “old” and thus unappealing :person_shrugging:?

There’s no question support has to be improved, as it’s bad right now.
There’s no question a Fairphone 5 successor or evolution needs to come, as Fairphone are not operating in fantasy land or with fantasy money.
Not doing one thing in order to do the other thing will not help here.

FP started teasing out the event on their website

Once filling in the email box, you can add the event to the calendar which looks a bit like that

  • I believe hours might be off cause to time zone differences

The background image is interesting
It is really rectangular, and the hole is weird
Could just be a generic design but could also be teasing something

The hole is a USB C port.
