Position of microphone on phone makes it difficult to have a conversation

I’ve got a Fairphone 4 and find it difficult to have a conversation as it’s awkward to hold the phone without covering the microphone on left hand side. People can hear me if the phone is flat on a table but not if I am holding it. How do other people deal with this? Thank you.

Holding it in the right hand helps me.

Thank you very much for replying to my query! That’s an idea, hadn’t tried that, although there is a microphone on the righthand side too, but higher up. It seems a very bizarre position to have the microphones, just where someone is likely to be holding the phone. Perhaps the designers thought people using the phone would have some sort of holder for it, but surely that’s not common for most people. Thanks again for writing.

You might actually want to check if the bottom microphone is ok on your device.

The My Fairphone app provides troubleshooting tips including hardware tests,
or you can dial * # * # 2 8 8 6 # * # * to access the whole range of available tests.

I often have to pinch the lower left-hand corner of the phone to get the microphone to work well. At first, I thought it was the case covering up the microphone so I dug a bunch of the cover out from around that tiny hole. only pinching seems to have helped.

I’m still having the bug that means when Google has access to the microphones it prevents other applications from accessing them and I have done since day 1 of owning my FP4! Simple solution you just disabled microphone access to Google and they all work fine

Uncomfortable when trying to speak (or listen) at the same time!

Thank you for this tip. I have just switched on my phone (despite the dire warnings) so will see how it goes.

Thank you, I will try this.
