New software update Kola Nut 1.8.5 is ready

No, this will not erase data on the phone, but only data from the Fairphone Updater. I suspect that the Fairphone Updater believes you did not upgrade (although you did).

On the other hand: If the Fairphone Updater checks for updates (for 5 seconds or so) when you connect to a network, this is expected behaviour. If the notification doesn’t disappear, erasing data might help.

Ok, I followed the instructions on https://fairphone.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/201189497 to install Storage Upgrader 1.8.5 and now my phone feels like new (meaning all data lost but no problems or anomalies, even with gapps).

Thanks all who helped!

But a side note: the software of this new forum is painful, at least in combination with policy of having very broad topic. It would be so much more useful to have something stackexchange-style.

Did you try to update/install any app from the Play Store? This should reset your connection to GCM.

Yes, several times. GCM stayed disabled (still is), but after a few hours, message notifications for Text Secure / Threema have come back, WIFI-sign becomes blue again …

Since you state that it stopped working. Did you try to set the music on the SD card as ringtone again after the update? I imagine this has to be done so the Fairphone can link the ringtones.

Yes, again it took a few hours and restarts and the ringtones worked again …
Anyway thank you for your support. Next time a should be more patient.

When I try to update on 1.8.5 (I have already 1.8), after downloading and executing the “restart” button, I get a picture with little andoid telling me “KEIN BEFEHL”.Only by taking out the battery I can make my FP1 work again.

There is no way to install 1.8.5 on my phone. What is the main issue of 1.8.5? “Making update process easier?”

this is the recovery mode - you have to press the power buttons short to make the menu appear.
This is described in the official tutorial about manually install 1.8.5

Try updating again while having “stay awake” (Settings > Developer Options) ticked and the phone plugged in.
If you end up in recovery mode again see here how to get out without having to take out the battery:

https://forum.fairphone.com/t/fairphone-forum-dictionary/5309/21?u=paulakreuzer

I have exactly the same problem. Followed the instruction, and now it’s just “loading” and then black screen. I cannot even access recovery mode any more…it also goes into the loading-with-bluebackground -> black-screen loop.

Phone totally unusable.

Support very much welcome.

Oh no that sounds to me like you hard-bricked your phone. (A word I just learned today, so I’m not exactly an expert.)

I am now trying to flash my phone, as described in this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Fairphone_Fairphone/Guides#How_to_restore_Fairphone_if_you_totally_bricked_it) and as suggested in some of the posts above.

I installed the driver, downloaded the Flash tool (http://mtk2000.ucoz.ru/down9/FlashTool_exe_v5.1320.00.rar), downloaded the Fairphone recovery file (http://storage.googleapis.com/fairphone-updates/FP1-Fairphone_OS_v1_8_5_OTA_2015-05-07.zip).

However, when I load the scatter file in the FlashTool I get the following error:

Did anybody else encounter the same error? Since others have been succesful, I assume I must be missing something… could anybody point me in the right direction? thanks!

I think you have to download the image-binary http://storage.googleapis.com/fairphone-updates/FP1-Fairphone_OS_v1_8_5_Image_2015-05-07.zip if you have the updated partition layout, with the original partition-layout the file http://storage.googleapis.com/fairphone-updates/FP1-Fairphone_OS_1G13G_v1_8_5_Image_2015-05-07.zip. You downloaded the recovery -file, I remember the same error some time ago with another update I made, so it’s worth a try. good luck

I moved a post to an existing topic: Google Apps can’t be reinstalled

thanks for your reply, but in the files you linked there’s no scatter file. How am I supposed to flash them?

Is there no simpler solution for an update? Your suggestion sounds rather sophisticated. And if there is none, what is the ‘stay awake’ in the german Version?

I finally found the solution… I this post by @daveboschma in another thread explaing the process in more details and providing direct links to the files needed:

before you start the process, read the post until the end: there’s a link to a functioning scatter file by @Kephson that will allow you to install directly the latest 1.8.5 version of Fairphone.

I’m glad it’s working now.
I thought you allready tried that solution since you said…

…replying to a post that said

Btw, @inamo did you solve your problems yet?

My update worked without any issues. However, now the phone regularly checks for updates - even when WIFI is disabled. How can I turn that off?

Here you go.

Tried to install autostarts via F-Droid, but only get cryptic “not installed” message. Don’t have google store. Any alternatives you could recommend?

Oh ok Paul, Sorry about that I didn’t realize you weren’t FP employee. Thanks for the update. I’ll keep my eye out for the new storage upgrade then.
