I just noticed the answer to this was still missing here … which is No.
I received one of the first batch of FP2 and it will turn 9y at the end of the year. So, also already 8y in use now.
Mine has random reboots (once or twice a day) and a non-working microphone (using hands-free speaking for calls) and it’s still my main device. It runs on LOS for MicroG, which sometimes has some lags but most of the time is reasonably responsive.
The random reboots are getting worse unfortunately, so I’m not sure if it will reach the 9y as my main device. But it will get another job later, probably as a Kodi remote.
Still reasonable on /e/ for lots of things like web navigation, e-mail, music and radio, Bluetooth is fine. I’m listening to web radio right now.
And stable: 177 hours uptime.
I also have two friends with modest needs who use their FP2s as their only mobile phones.
Be aware that since earlier this year, while updates are still being released for FP2 (currently 2.1 A11 6 June), there are no more Android security updates, the last was 5 February 2024. But compare that with other eight-year-old phones!
Hi, my FP2 experience - on my 2nd device including replacement modules - mirrors yours: microphone failure is a bottomModule fault requiring a replacement module. Maybe worth asking on forum for back of drawer FP2s to get a working module;
The constant rebooting is likely a buggy app, as by uninstalling superfluous added apps, and deactivating unused apps (that can’t be uninstalled) I seemingly fixed this in my first FP2.
Good luck.
On my FP2 on /e/OS reboots are quite common when zooming into pictures in the gallery app. I’ve no idea what this indicates, so it’s not easy to work around that. But while it was mainly thought for xmpp messaging and a few podcasts, my son regularly proves that one can still watch YouTube videos on that device which I myself tried to avoid even when the FP2 was still my daily driver.
My FP2 is still holding strong after having been transformed into a stationary bike video station.
According to my notes, I received my FP2 in January 2016. So it has survived for more than 8 years, altough only as a secondary device for the last 4 years. I had to replace the backcase some years ago but everything else including the battery is still original.
But now I am thinking about retiring it. The device becomes unresponsive quite often and reboots happen more frequently.
8 years as my first, only and daily use smartphone should not be remarkable, but I guess it is. Nothing much to report since I reported nothing much a year ago. It just keeps trucking. Thank you Fairphone for giving me a Google-free experience since 2017.
8 years was always my minimum target for the FP, as my previous Ericsson luddyphone was 8 when I first went smart. No reason yet to upgrade. My FP2 does everything I need from a phone. Can I make 10 years?
Sadly I won’t celebrating 9 years.
The constant rebooting makes it to hard to use it.
(But my FP1 is still working.)
Sorry to hear that
Anyway thanks for this journey.
I believe mine will reach 9 years these days with ease. Still works well with e/OS/, mainly for BT audio playback at home beside my FP4 for everyday use.
Things advanced slightly faster with e/OS/ IMHO.
HD audio on both devices is working fine, BT ist stable (wasn’t good with LineageOS on FP2). Charge limit control on FP4 works and using it as “source” for my Kensington docking station works flawless too. No data sniffing TV set needed.
I’m planing to make ten years full with my FP2. Since it only moves within my home zone risk is little for it to break deadly.
I have my Fairphone 2 for over 8 years now .
Since DivestOS ended and there’s no other way in sight to get an Android OS with a resemblance of a chance of current security updates for it anymore, that’s unfortunately the end of the line for me and the Fairphone 2, because when I’m still using it now and then as my backup phone, it’s on the internet, and without security updates that’s just increasingly irresponsible towards fellow internet users as time advances .
It’s sticking around until a replacement arrives as my new backup phone.
Mine turned 8 in August already and I use it only as “MP3” Player with Kamera Module removed in the Sauna without internet.
