Is the Fairphone promise a lie?

this is definitely where communication will help. bad customer support + missing replacements parts for a month is going to concern a lot of people. saying “Sorry we were late on ordering replacement parts, just had a chat with our suppliers, hopefully we can get them before the end of June, thank you for your patience.” makes a huge difference.

I don’t think people care if mistakes are made as long as accountability is somewhere in the picture. better than silence.

things that are repairable are growing more and more popular recently, you’ll see in some comments of fairphone videos people say “check out this other phone” which is built to be repaired too.

The thing is, fairphone is very vocal about paying workers a living wage and where they source their metals and making things from recycled plastic. etc, i think fairphone is the only one super focussed on doing that. and looks like doing it very well… i guess at least they have that

from what i heard, fairphone’s profit margin is extremely small like… 0.0something% i actually think it’s harder for small companies to make money. i feel like the growth is exponential.

the more resources they put into existing customers, the less they can put into getting new ones. putting too much into new or old, will destroy their original idea. for sure.

I dream of having a phone that lasts for over a decade and doesn’t burn like the blazing sun every time i use it. if my phone just had a slightly better processor it would be perfect. the picture quality is more than good enough, i’ve dropped it down the stairs routinely, and it is plenty fine, i couldn’t care less how thick it is. if there was a way to keep it forever, i would. @_@ so i really hope FP6 has forever in mind. idk if upgradeable parts is too much to ask. I upgraded the same PC a bunch, it must be something worth investing in.

Sorry to disappoint, but a modable phone or custom parts will not come in the foreseeable future.
PCs where and still are IBM-PC compatible devices. They have common slots for PCI cards and so on.
A smartphone has nothing like that and it is also practically impossible to change anything on a circuit board. Furthermore almost all hardware is capsuled in the SOC.
There might be a chance that it would be possible, that Fairphone could keep the mainboard size and with that also the remaining parts, but I wouldn’t count on that.

it doesn’t have to be perfect, just close enough. even if people have to get a new cuircuit board every now and then.

plus, if people need to learn to solder to keep their phone longer, why not? I’m getting into soldering so i don’t need to throw away my old gadgets.

I’m starting to think Fairphone is taking the piss. The battery is now available again in the shop. But I can’t buy the battery. The shop hangs at the checkout step. I’m stuck in an endless loop and can’t get any further.

Ich hoffe, irgendwer hat das Fairphone schon gemeldet und in 1-2 Monaten funktioniert das wieder…

Edit: Whoops, too tired and replied in German
Just referencing to the thread about duplicate addresses during the checkout that seem to stop many from completing their purchase for a while now already

Hi @janweiss,
Thanks for the hint with the addresses! After many attempts, I ordered as a guest. That has worked. It’s really crazy how many problems Fairphone currently has. Hopefully they get everything under control!

Und kein Problem wegen der Antwort auf Deutsch. Das kann ich besser als Englisch…

Tomorrow they launch a new product, so if not fixed by then, the start for the device will be extra bumpy…
