No, I don’t think that I’ve already perform the storage update… How do I know? (But I upgraded every time when there was a new update…)
So, to be clear, I should downgrade to 1.6, then do the storage update (what is this, btw? O:-)), which will wipe my system (sorry, but what does this mean? Is everything gone then?), and upgrade again to 1.8?
I think, I have two partitions (internal memory and phone memory) and the SD card. But I can only use the internal memory of 1 GB for my apps…

Edit: Actually I did not know anything about this storage upgrade… It would have been nice to know it in advance before upgrading to 1.8. AND - I did not get this “e-mail” where the new update to 1.8 was announced, because my fairphone was a gift.

I also emphase the sillyness, that to apply the “UnfiedStorageUpdate” (USU) only can be done from V1.6! What the hell ???
I did not installed the USU up to now, because I did not want to loose all my data/apps and spent hours to re-set all my stuff + At the moment I don’t need it
I hoped that I could wait until a better way of applying the USU is available by FP
But now you are coming with the information (quite too late for some), that if I want to apply the USU later, I first have to downgrade to 1.6, make USU, upgrade to current version AND have to re-set all my stuff ??
practically this means for me I can/will not update the OS to 1.8+, before doing the USU, which I don’t want to make before neccassary…With this, you cancelled my out of using updates. Thanks.
Sorry…regardless what the technical reason is behind this ---- in my opinion this procedure is NOT acceptable!
Unfortunately FP now has supported my view, that I hate applying Updates! “Never change a running system” is since than my slogan after early microsoft days, where updates everytime crashed my system and wasted hours of time to have it like before
@Sandy: Yes, if you apply the UnifiedStorageUpdate ALL your installed APPS and their settings as well as pics, contacts etc. will be deleted. Only way to get back is to make backups and/or reinstall the apps (either by backups or by GooglePlaystore, which rememberes your installed apps, if I am right)
I have the same problem i.e. app icons disappear again after each restart. I have NO SD card, I upgraded from 1.6 to 1.8, re-installed Google and have not applied the 1.6 UnfiedStorageUpdate previously.
Sorry, I don’t understand that. You deliever an update, which kills every restart the configuration of the icons? Are you for real? I expect working and tested updates. I don’t have the time to read 100 pages in forums since I found what I have to do.
And fairphone restarts so often by itself, so I’m very stressed out. That’s buggy.
I expect, that you deliever soon a fix or you write an instruction step by step for that (via email.)

Thanks, for writing this post: It’s more than not acceptable. I made the update, and now, I’m stressed out about the time it will take to undo it. It’s a wasting time and I expect that fairphone will fix it as soon as possible!
You have to use an other lunchner now because FP launcher with “version” 1.8 is broken. I don’t have time to re-install all app buttons (which are too big) on the homescreen again after every startup of the phone.
That’s a subjective cup-is-half-empty-or-half-full thing. I wouldn’t call it broken. It just works different than what you’re used to and that is just not to your liking. But to label it as “broken” is just wide off the mark and another testament to your unreasonably negative and sour attitude here.
As for 1.8 in general, it may not be flawless (no piece of software is), but it works just as well as 1.6 did and fixes some very important issues.
I have the same problem, half of the icons gone after restart.
My question to the users: Has anyone of the people who had this problem tried doing the unified storage update that they recommended, and has it yielded any solution?!? It seems quite complicated AND a lot of hassle and time because of the backup that needs to be made, so it would be great to know whether it actually solves the problem before carrying it out.
If the problem however is this ringtone thing that someone mentioned, then certainly the storage update doesn’t solve the icon problem… any news on this, fairphone people?
Can’t give you an authoritative answer, since I haven’t had the problem and thus haven’t needed to solve it. All I know is that
a) I have the unified partition (did this when upgrading to version 1…6), and
b) I ditched the new launcher in favour of the old Fairphone Launcher (available in the Play Store).
All my icons stay in place.
I don’t know if it’s the new launcher or some other part of the upgrade that causes it. But unless you’ve fallen in love with the look of the new launcher (e.g. the larger icons), what you could do is switching to the old launcher and check whether this will solve the problem. If so, it’s an easy way out.
I have the exact same issue : since the 1.8 update, some of the icons on my desktop and on the “quick launch menu” accessible by sliding from the botton right disappear at each reboot… After reading your post, I checked, and yes, it seems that only the apps located on the “phone storage” are removed. The apps on the “internal storage” are not. It is quite annoying because I don’t have enough space on the “internal storage” to store all the apps I would like to access easily ! Any workaround ?
Anyway, I would like to say that besides this issue, the new update is quite fine, and I like the new look’n feel ! It’s nice to feel like having a more recent android, even if it juste eye candy
Yes, I have a FP first edition, but I have already proceed to the update in 1.8, so I think I could no applied the unified storage anymore ? The Fairphone Updater only says I’m up to date, and I have no menu or options. I didn’t realize I had to do this update before applying the 1.8 patch.
In the new updater you can go to the Advanced users section and install 1.6 from there (press Fairphone OS 1.6 also if it says, that this is the version you are using, this is a wrong info).
Finally, I reduced the number of icons on my desktop and move the concerned apps to the internal storage, because I don’t want to loose all the data on my phone just for a few missing icons.
