I don’t think this is possible with the standard SMS/MMS app (or it might be, but only as MMS, don’t remember exactly).
Would using a different messenger (like e.g. Signal or Threema) be an option? Signal would also be able to handle SMS messages.
Or you might check the Play Store for different SMS apps…
