Google Apps can't be reinstalled

I am so with you! No information in two days, plus a community moderator who recommends finding alternatives to Google in the middle of this, is a little much.

@megalies @Alexander_Hirsch I agree. A little bit more information about the fixing process would be very well.

I think nobody should flash his phone and I wouldn’t do it so. This should only be the last way for the people who are in the GAPPS loop and have no other possibility at the moment but want to have a working phone.

All the other people which have a self partitioned phone (of the first batch) I wouldn’t advise to try the update at the moment.

The Community Moderators are “normal” users in no way associated with Fairphone. They just try to help and when someone promotes free alternatives to the GApps, this is in no way meant to annoy you.

They are moderators because of their continued activity in and dedicated support of this forum, they are not in any offical spokespersons of Fairphone. They do a great job and we can’t deny them to have an opinion!

You are right that it about time for an offical reply from Fairphone

@megalies
While the scatter files and tips from @Kephson seem to work great for some users (thank you!), they are probably not meant for everybody.

This is very good advice that should be spread via fairphones offical channels! It’s about time for a blog or newsletter!

Hi all,

For the record, I followed instructions at #82 above and it worked for me. I now have v1.8.5 with Google Apps installed (thanks @daveboschma).
First batch phone which I had self partitioned.

Hello all,

Still no news and I’m still with my dumb FP…
Any news to solve the GAAPS issue?

Thanks

@vitorvasconcelos here is what a fairphone devloper just posted in another thread:

Thanks @paulakreuzer!

@Stefan: 1) Is the 1.8.5 the latest update which now (May 22) is available? After selecting “install” 3 times in the reappearing Fairphone Updater it still tells me that I still use version Cherry 1.6
2) I have the same problem which hasti describes in the beginning: Clicking on Google Play Store it is no opening, but the message ‘“Google Play Store” wurde beendet.’ is reappearing, the App closes automatically. I tried deinstalling all updates of the app via system configurations which led to deinstalling the play store as a whole. Thus, I reinstalled it as a freeware .akp. The problem keeps reappearing, the widget-app store installer is always staying grey (thus, the .akp-“solution”).

Any ideas?

@elha Yes, 1.8.5 is the latest OS version, it was just released a few days ago.
Your problem with installing the update might be solved if you plug in your phone and tick the “keep screen on” option in settings > “developer options” while updating.

After the update and - if you don’t have it yet - the sorage update you can reinstall google apps. All of thees theps are done in the updater App.

Afterwards Play store should work again.

@paulakreuzer: What is the sorage update? How do I get that? What are theps? Until now I haven’t even succeeded in updating to 1.8.5 - I will try this power + “keep screen on” option. Thanks fo your quick reply!!

If you have a first batch Fairphone then you may still have an “Internal Storage” and a “Phone Storage” (in Settings > Storage). If so than you can change that by installing the 1.8.5 storage upgrade after the OS update. (definitly backup first!) If not you can skip this step.

I have a 1FPU, second send-out FP. Do you refer to this, to?
In Settings there is the option storage whihc shows the composition of the internal 16GB where apps, download files, pictures, audio, data… is stored AND I can access a file manager with the file symbol where a CD, a movie and a picture are in a box (found in Apps overview). Are they different? Do I delete any files if I install 1.8.5??
How do I do a backup?

Ok so your storage is allready unified (the U in FP1U), so you only need to do the normal update, wich usually doesn’t delete data, but it’s a good idea to make a backup anyway.

Thanks a lot for your help, Paul!! Will get back here if it doesn’t work tonight

Paul!
I have a FP of the very first batch. I managed to upgrade to 1.8.5 and also to unify the partition. Google Apps and Play Store still unable to install. Has any fix yet been released that I’ve missed?

When did you do the partition upgrade?
4 hours ago Rick announced that a new version of the unified partition upgrader is now available (the one that could be downloaded the last days caused the problems with GAPPS.)

If you did the partition upgrade before you still have to wait for the solution, if you did it afterwards you are the first one reporting problems with the new version.

okay. thanks. i followed all the instructions but when i go into “apply update from sdcard” the directory is empty though i have deposited the zip file accordingly onto the sd card. how do i proceed? my phone tells me it can’t find any sd card at all.

So any estimation on when we finally get a fix…

…I am sitting here for days now and can’t do anything with my phone, while I am already seeing advertisements for the next phone all over the place and getting mails about it, yet not even the old FP1 is working as it should.

@michaschm I can understand that you’re disappointed by the update, but if you don’t explain which problems do you have, nobody can help you to fix your problems

Hi all,

after reading every topic on this problem for the past 3 days and trying everything, I hope that you can help me. Let me describe my problem, although I think I am only repeating what others have said before.

I downloaded the KolaNut 1.8.5 update (no pre-update was available), which didn’t seem to work, because my phone kept telling me that there is a new version and everytime I tried to do the update, it said that no file was found. I then did the storage upgrade (2 days ago) manually and then it seemed to work. However, I still couldn’t install Google Apps. I then tried to go back to Jelly Bean or 1.6, neither worked. Then I tried to put 1.6 back on manually, but no files were discovered on my sd card or phone when in recovery mode. I now downloaded the version of the upgrader that Rick postet about and tried to put it on my phone, no success with this file either, it doesn’t show in recovery mode. I also tried connecting my SD card to my computer and put the file on, no success. I also tried the ADB stuff, but it wouldn’t connect to my phone, so nothing happened and I had to take the battery out to get it back running again.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
