I use a Siemens A55 till the Fairphone 2 arrives. Still waiting for it.

Since December 2007. Before that, it was used by my mother.

The Fairphone 2 is my second mobile phone as the Siemens A55 is my first mobile phone.

The Fairphone 2 is my first smartphone.

(5) Why have you decided not to use your old mobile phone anymore?

Because it lacks functions that a modern smartphone has. It has no web browser, no email application and no calendar. You only have a telephone, SMS, a (now obsolete) WAP browser and some pre-installed games. Until now, I have arranged myself with the limited functionality. I have written an application in Google Apps Script which send me some information per SMS and the public transport also provides some SMS information.

(6) Why have you chosen a Fairphone and not another smartphone?

The main reason why I bought a Fairphone is that I donā€™t accept to buy a new mobile phone every two years. In my opinion, the ā€œclassicalā€ Android smartphone manufacturers stop too early supplying software updates so you will soon suffer from incompatibilities and security holes (like Stagefright). I use Android because it is not a ā€œwalled gardenā€ like iOS or Windows Phone.

(7) Have you bought the Fairphone 2 by yourself, did you get it as a present or where did you get the Fairphone 2?

I have ordered and paid the Fairphone 2 by myself, at 16 July 2015. My delivery number 3773 came on 21 July 2015.

my original demands were : a robust phone ( the Z3C was terribly fragile and got scratched and damaged very easily, and i donā€™t want to always ā€œcheck for my phone securityā€) , easily rootable, powerfull and with a big battery. but Fairphone made me discover the ethics problem around our phone, and it influenced me, as my dream phone didnā€™t exist, i took the FP2 despite its little battery and processor.

Ah, a trip down Memory-Lane
I might have jumbled the numbers-questions, while composing this reply

  1. Earlies mobile phones:
    First one, Around 2007-2008, not sure, a gift from close friend . A Nokiaā€¦
    ended up in the laundrymachineā€¦and drowned
    Second one: Nokia 1100(?), second hand (gift) from colleage.
    Got stolen (from my home!) in nov/dec 2010.
  2. Earlier SMARTPhones: My first Smartphone was a HTC DESIRE HD, got this ā€˜for freeā€™ in combination with a (expansive, as it turns out) Contract. Purchased in nov/dec 2010. In 2013 I switched to a SIM ONLY from another mobile provider, so I could continue using my HTC DESIRE HD. A fine Phone, that one!
    Unfortunately HTC no longer supplied system-updates since ehmā€¦2012.
    Kept this Phone in use, although hopelesly hindered by the aging system and slow decay of the Phone itself (buttons stop functioning, etc) 'till mij FP2 arrived, 22th december 2015.
    So all in all, 3 previous phones, one of these a smartphone.
    Reasons for FP2?

A Huawei Honor 3x (720p version). Pretty good phone for the price (~200ā‚¬ with a spare battery) at the time (end of 2013), but it only had 3g. I didnā€™t want to wait for my suppliersā€™ stock of Mi Notes to be refilled at the time.

1, though I own two NVidia Shield Tablet LTE Edition which might be considered smartphones (I know Iā€™ve used one of them as a text message receiver when my phone screen was broken).

I broke my screen by letting it fall half a year ago. I repaired it myself but the antenna seems to bug and sometimes I donā€™t receive any text message for a week, which I find annoying (plus they are definitvely lost, I donā€™t even know I should have had them, itā€™s embarassing). Also, the software is stuck at Android 4.4 and itā€™s very hard to make custom roms. I donā€™t like that.

6 Why have you choosed a Fairphone and not another smartphone?

Durability and ethical concerns, obviously. Plus a slight hope for modularity, but I donā€™t really expect much in this area from FP2. I would have liked the ability to hack my own software on the phone (ie. not have to use binary blobs, especially tailored to Android) but that wonā€™t be a deal breaker. Especially if we can get Ubuntu Touch and SailfishOS on it.

A fairphone 1, which goes to a friend, before that I used a Nokia 5230

Fairphone 1 - 2 year
Nokia 5230 - 5 year and then it went to a friend where it still worked for 2 years.
Nokia 3310 - 5 years
Motorola cd 160 - 5 years

Motorola cd 160, the battery was giving problems so I changed to
Nokia 3310, again because of batteryproblems it was time for a new one.
Nokia 5230, it still worked, but I wanted a phone so I could combine a ā€˜TomTomā€™ and a phone in one product.
Fairphone 1, I wanted a smartphone for the wifi (the Nokia 5230 had no wifi) for apps, especially for the traintable, easier agenda,

I think that this thread should be FP2 only because the FP1 launch dates back some time. The readers then can also be clear at the first look that the answerers here (will) use a FP2. But I allow you to use the questions in an own thread. (There could be more questions like ā€œAre you satisfied by the FP1?ā€ which now not really can be answered for the FP2.)

Bought in early 2012, so pretty much exactly four years.

Five. Thatā€™s including my current phone and a shared family mobile back when they were slowly breaking into the general consumer market.

Itā€™s constantly wigging out on me, doing funny things to the settings on its own terms. As a phone itā€™s still doing its job, but itā€™s lacking in the smart department. At only a couple hundred MB of internal storage even minor software updates are impossible, and Wi-Fi reception is spotty at best. In technical terms itā€™s always been a dumb phone in disguise, and Iā€™ve gotten used to it. The real problem is that itā€™s replaced my alarm clock (praise tantalum for vibration alarms), and my particular phone came with a built-in flux capacitor, so each morning I might wake up at some random hour some time in the 80ā€™s. Also, I would kind of like to have a real smartphone that actually lets me do things.

6. Why have you choosed a Fairphone and not another smartphone?

Iā€™m a dyed-in-the-wool slacktivist. I choose to do ā€œthe right thingā€ whenever convenience allows. Iā€™ve had an eye on FP since they were crowdfunding their first phone. Back then, the consumer in me was itching to get one, but I did have a functional phone and FP explicitly told potential buyers in my situation not to buy for the sake of sustainability, which instantly doubled my admiration of and respect for their mission. Enter FP2, except this time I will be more than happy to ditch my current phone for the above reasons. The price tag weighed heavy, which is why I was hesitant to commit until the very end of the crowdfunding phase. I did eventually because at the end of the day I truly believe the product and people behind it deserve all the support they can get.

I had a Lumia 630.

I got the phone in summer 2014, after my previous phone was stolen.

I had some Siemens dumbphone followed by a Nokia 3310, an iPhone and then a Lumia 800. Including the Lumia 630 - thatā€™s 3 smartphones, and 5 phones altogether.

It wasā€¦ ermā€¦ not very good. Web pages crashed after around 20 seconds, almost without fail. It broke completely at the end of November.

Iā€™ve felt quite uncomfortable about the ethics of smartphone production for a while, and stumbled on Fairphone by accident.

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

Iā€™ve had my Sony phone since August 2015

About 8.

Not sure but 4 I believe.

It is not old but I donā€™t like it. I canā€™t open it so I donā€™t own it. It took me nearly 2 weeks to work out a way to root it. It is also waterproof, which means if you open it, it no longer is. The battery is stuck on to the mainboard and everything in there is extremely fragile. It is a beautiful, excellent phone, but very unexciting to people like me. I will support sustainability by selling it.

I like the ethics, the aims and everything behind the Fairphone. I also like to experiment with my hardware, repair it, modify it and customize it - which I believe I will be able to do in a much larger extent with a FP2.[quote=ā€œTobiasF, post:1, topic:11524ā€]

  • I didnā€™t keep a record of when I bought it on a second-hand marketplace, Iā€™ve no paper or digital record with a date, but probably some 5 years or so.

  • Alcatel 311, it died down after some 2-3 years of use
  • Nokia 1100, bought new, lasted me some 4-5 years before it started disfunctioning and I bought my second hand Nokia.
  • Nokia 1100, the later second hand one, has now merged with the former one (that I kept as backup), with my current phone lasting some 4-5 years until this year when I started combining the best functioning parts of both (phone, cover, keyboard, battery) to keep it alive till the FP2 arrives.

  • Because I didnā€™t want a smartphone at all, Iā€™m very much afraid of theft and fraud and decided my next phone after the Nokia 1100 dies down would be a dumbphone again, but then I got very enthusiastic and happy from reading about the project, about what the FP team is doing to start a movement to bring fairness and sustainability to the electronics industry. Being very depressed about the state of the world for half my life and for instance about what Iā€™ve read about tin-mining on Bali and tantalum-mining in the Congo, something that lifts my mood is a welcome change, so I bought a smartphone to support fairer more sustainable electronics by ā€˜voting with my walletā€™.

I wonā€™t receive mine untiul I return home in February, so until then Iā€™m alternating between my iphone 5 and a cheap basic nokia phone (the iphone doesnā€™t support sims local to my area for some reason)

The iphone 5 has had a longer life than it mightā€™ve - got it second-hand off eBay three years ago, and after it got stepped on a year ago I sent it off to the insurance people to be repaired (a perk of my bank account) and bought the nokia phone. The latter has lasted one year.

I think Iā€™d say about 7 - used a succession of cheaper phones as a teenager for securityā€™s sake or emergencies, and upgraded to my Dadā€™s old iphone 3G, then a 4 a few years later, and now my current 5.

Itā€™s a combination of a number of factors. The inconvenience and Ā£60 fee for repair of my iphone 5 last year has taught me to value repairability and longevity rather than continually updating to new models; the 16-GB storage space without the possibility of expansion grows irritating; and Iā€™d like to detach from the general Apple super-connectivity.

Initially I was thinking of getting a Jolla, and Iā€™ve been exploring modularity in smartphones as news progresses. Sadly, Project Ara is no nearer completion now than when I heard of it two years ago, and looks increasingly unviable in the long-term (especially as there is thusfar no convincing solution to the problem of dropping an Ara and the modules flying everywhere). I like the idea of a phone that is built to last and to repair, that symbolises a movement for change and equity rather than ceding to a corporate empire. It helps that the FP2 design is beautiful, rather reminding me of the ā€œSwiss Army Credit Cardā€ put out by Victorinox ages agoā€¦

Both! I bought it for myself as a present, buoyed by my first-year GDL exam results in November. Contributed to the crowdfunding campaign in its final few weeks, and will get one of those special-edition models right out of the gate. Looking damned forward to it, I can tell you.

When I got a new phone, the old one was used for my second SIM/as a spare phone and its predecessor was given to a friend.

1: FP1

I really like my FP1, it replaced almost all my other devices (digital camera, e-book reader, tablet, notebook), at least when Iā€™m not at home, but Iā€™m really longing for a better camera and a larger screen (that has always been my reason to get a new phone). And on the other hand, it really makes me nervous not to have a good spare phone in case it gets damaged or stolen. Iā€™d really hate to switch back now to good old Symbianā€¦

When I first heard about the FP1 crowdfunding campain back in june 2013, I liked the idea so much that I decided to support it to make Fairphone possible. Otherwise, maybe I would still walk around carrying several kilos of devices and their proprietary chargersā€¦
And this year, I couldnā€™t resist the temptation to preorder FP2, because Iā€™m quite unhappy with most of the fotos I took during the last 2 years and the modularity concept is sooooo cool.

I bought it by myself.
