that’s kinda nuts it still usb2.0 + OTG for the next one too… I don’t know what it would take to create a community built usb module, I’m not an electrical engineer by any means but that missing functionality is really missed for me too
… and if I remember correctly Fairphone cited space constraints on the motherboard to keep the phone’s size halfway in check as a factor in leaving out USB 3 (which would need more lanes on the motherboard), so without a new design of the motherboard in a novel way which wasn’t possible back then in the FP6 design stage no other module would help.
On to the Fairphone 7 next year, it would seem.
This moment, when you receive the mail about the Fairphone 6+ and read the changes…
Newer SoC with Apple-like performance upgrade (almost like zero, maybe 5%) and 12GB LPDDR5 instead of 8GB LPDDR5…
No USB 3.0, no better camera or anything else…
BUT for just 50€ upcharge which is pretty fair IMO so, hope that it will be substantial in the future! (Not the RAM, the SoC performance…)
Yeah, good power upgrade. Still frustrated about the lack of desktop/HDMI mode, even in the FP6+
I just checked the FP6 schematics and I see why there isn’t USB 3.0 available
The connector for the USB-C port itself could carry all the lanes but the (probably) same connector that connects between main- and sub-board can’t, it’s already occupied with various stuff… so they would have to move stuff away or use a wider connector… maybe it also about the signal integrity?
I’d really love to hear an official statement and take the community within the process of the design… I think they tried to add USB 3.0 somehow, why should you bring up a giant connector for USB port if only half of them are used/needed?
Just a guess, but maybe they borrowed some design feom the FP4/5, which both have USB-3.0.
That was already confirmed at launch that there is no space.
I’m considering moving from my venerable FP3 to something new and was happy to see the 6+ announcement, on first glance it looked like the perfect timing, with 12GB future oriented - but USB2? That’s shocking. I plan to use the new phone for 7+ years, and I’d like to experiment with new features like Desktop mode, and they seriously stay on USB2? This is a massive design flaw, and comments like “people prefer wireless” is just utter BS, as it does not cover relevant use cases. Really disappointed… I guess I will wait for either ShiftPhone 9, or FP7 - whichever comes first. Pity…
BTW about “wireless”
Uhm… I am using that with wireless ADB debugging and Scrcpy…
Guess what you have to do sometimes… pair your devices again for safety reasons…
Only thing that COULD work… compression… that somehow, someone make it possible to compress FHD video with 60hz into less than 480Mbits…
Not impossible but demanding and probably the real output will be lower than 480Mbits due to cable length, coating, diameter of the wires, …
I am replying at my own message because, I have the well know problem that my android auto is laggy when my phone’s screen is off…
I think I will open or reply for this issue
