Does anybody know whether the FP5 can be used simultaneously for calling (with one SIM) and offering a hotspot to my laptop (with the other SIM) without reducing the data rate, preferably under eos-murena?
I understood from other threads that with Voice over LTE turned on hotspot + call should be possible even with only one SIM, but at the price of a reduced data rate for the hotspot, as the voice also has to travel across the LTE connection. Also this is only possible if the provider infrastructure allows this etc. → so the two SIM solution seems preferrable to me.
Welcome to the FP forum!
I think the voice portion on the LTE data link is not really relevant as even for a high voice quality codec, voice won’t use more than 128kBit/s whereas LTE could transfer up to 300MBit/s (ok, most of the time it will be less, but LTE will probably nearly always reach at least several MBit/s as mimimum).
Apart from that, to answer your question: yes, it’s no problem to use two SIMs (keep in mind you’ll need one physical SIM and one eSIM) for your proposed setup. Just enable data service for the second (“data only”) SIM (which is possible on all OS systems I know, also Murena /e/OS).
I don’t have a definite answer on the two SIM question but I want to give this into your consideration: In VoLTE, a phone call takes about 20-50 kbps. Compared to a 25-100 Mbps LTE connection that seems negligible to me. Furthermore some providers limit the data rate. Technically this is accomplished by setting the limit in the data bearer of the EPS (evolved packet system). To allow for a better prioritization of the call packets, VoLTE has its own bearer which shouldn’t be impacted by the data rate limitation made by the provider. So if your phone would be able to have a higher date rate than what the provider limits it to (e.g. because you’re close to the base station and there aren’t too many other users in the cell), you shouldn’t encounter a decrease of date rate when calling at all.
