FP5 - Battery Life

Especially not here in this topic please, this is about battery life

No, I donā€™t restart regularly. I also didnā€™t observe increasing battery consumption over time, just very regular consumption that got worse after the first charge & discharge cycle and then stayed at that level.

I must have rebooted a few times because I was trying to figure out if some settings reproducibly reset after a reboot, but I donā€™t remember exactly when I did so.

If the battery drain becomes more pronounced, you can try restarting the phone and let us know if it helps. Was just an idea though, so if it doesnā€™t work out, sad

@ilmari can you link to the correct app on Google Play store (or wherever you found it)? Iā€™d like to try it out

Iā€™m closely watching the feedbacks about FP5 before aquiring one, battery life being one of the most - if not the most - important criteria for me.
I take it that for now the general consensus is that battery life is at best average and most likely not great right ?

Itā€™s fine really. I disconnected my phone from my charger at 7a.m. this morning (admittedly didnā€™t use it much) and I have 89% left at 1 PM, 6 hours later.
However, thatā€™s without AOD (always on display) and without double-tap-to-wake. Bluetooth, wifi and mobile network are on (but I havenā€™t been away from home much => wifi all the time)

The thing is, a phone with an Amoled screen should be capable of AoD without suffering too much in the battery department - and I think Fairphone will solve this in due time.

Iā€™d also say that itā€™s fine. I only charge my FP5 up to 80% and I have a little less battery than Iā€™d like to. So with the additional 20% capacity, it is definitely enough! The idle battery drain is a bit higher than Iā€™d expect though, so if you only use your phone occasionally and expect it to last for more than two days, there are better alternatives out there.

On the other hand, the battery drain was very consistent for me. There are never situations where I pull out my phone and wonder why the battery is so low. Iā€™ve had far worse already.

Interesting, Iā€™m actually owning a FP4 and been so far very pleased with the battery (except for the latest LOS updates that seemed to have messed this up but thatā€™s another story).
Yeah Iā€™m looking for pretty much the ability to get about 2 days of battery life when the phone remains mostly idle except for a bit of whatsapping.
Iā€™m fine with a 24 hours battery life if the usage is high, but I couldnā€™t cope with a idle drain of 2-3% per hour.

An idle drain of 2-3% per hour would cost you 48 % - 72 % battery, leaving you with ~30% of screen and app power consumption, which would probably be ~2-3h. Iā€™d say thatā€™s perfectly serviceable. And if you are closer to the 2% of idle power consumption, it gets even better.

Iā€™m more aiming at a 4-6h of SOT, something I used to achieve on the FP4

I expect that in due time with some more tweaking the FP4 numbers should be achievable at the least. But that might still take a while for Fairphone to work out all the power-draining bugs.

My point stands, 2% idle power draw isnā€™t perfect, but serviceable. With 3% it gets a bit difficult.

First impression on Android 14 (on Pixel phones) also seem promising, as Google seems to have reduced background processes significantly. (Reddit - Dive into anything)

That Reddit thread seems to just talk about better thermal performance with Android 14. This could be an Android 14 feature, but it sounds more like a Pixel 7 specific hardware improvement. A specific improvement for just that phone model.

Top comment seems to state that pixel 5a benefits from battery and thermal improvements too but yeah, only pixel phones are mentioned so farā€¦

yeah the battery life of the Fairphone 5 is rather short. Even shorter than on my iphone 12 back then
I have to recharge it twice a day if I use the Fairphone more often over the dayā€¦But I was aware of that issue before buying it, because many reviewers noted that rather short battery life.
Since the battery is very easy exchangeable I donā€™t care that much.

What Iā€™ve noticed is that the battery life is somehow extendend when 5G is deactivated and only LTE is on, also WLAN off brings some more time.

Speaking of battery life - what is this function ā€œbattery managerā€ that you can activate in the battery menu for? You can only activate oder deactivate it but it seems to have no function at all?

What I noticed on my FP5 is constant improvement of my battery life, as if the phone adaptedā€¦

ā€¦is supposed to watch the energy consumption of all apps and stop stuff that uses the battery unexpectedly much. That is as far as I remember. If all apps are behaving nicely the battery manager of course doesnā€™t have anything to do and disabling or enabling doesnā€™t make a difference.

Itā€™s explained in the menu itself  An iPhone (12) has indeed a better battery life, better than most Android phones.

The AOD app, itā€™s this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomer.alwayson

Sorry about the mess. As a newbie here, the post editing tools feel a bit confusing to me.
