FP5 Android 14 - loss of streaming to hearing aids

It is a fairphone 5 sided issue but it should be fixed soon

Hi Michele

Thank you so much for the update, it is so helpful to have an update even if there is no final answer especially as I, and probably many people, are thinking of reluctantly turning away from FP, or are repeatedly wasting time on their phone to see if anything has changed. PLEASE could you feedback to your manager how important updates are.

Please also can you share the problems with your communication in general. The hearing aid issue is an important issue for people with a disability, who need to be able to hear phone calls etc through their phone!!

Like many people on this chat I switched from a FP3 to 5 for the hearing aid compatability, although my FP was working fine (I was told by FP in 2023 in an email that FP5 would work with hearing aids).

When I got the new phone I emailed over 2 months ago to ask how to sort the problem and/or when it might work. I was told a reply might take 28 days but nearly 70 days later I have still not had a reply. I do not think this is good enough. I have had a Fairphone for 12 years (I helped crowdfund FP1). In previous years the support has been excellent, so am assuming this is now not being funded adequately.

How will FP keep us updated? How will we know if this issue has been fixed?

Thanks

Hi all,

For months I have the same problems as lot’s of others. Since I connected my hearing aid, I can’t make a normal phone call. I only have 1 hearing aid and normally make a phonecall with my other, good, ear. But I can only make phone calls on speaker now, with really s*cks. I really hope it will be fixed soon!

The brand of my hearing aid is Coselgi.

Can you tell a raw guess until you might have fixed the problem?
I have just bought an FP5 for a better connectivity in streaming in comparison to my former Samsung S10. But I was very disappointed as things got even worse: Streaming on my Signia hearing aids sometimes works on one side, breaks off suddenly or doesn’t start at all. As a musician, the streaming function is very useful for me during practicing (play-a-long).
Further, a reliable streaming of phone calls would make my life so much easier…
Depending on your estimated time span to fix the connectivity problem, I will further use the FP5 even with reduced functions. Otherwise I would switch back to my Samsung.

I sure do hope this update fixed it:

Thank you very much for your quick reply.
I will wait until my provider makes the update available.

I got invited to try the beta release a week ago and it’s fixed the problem for me. It’s been great. Thank you Fairphone!

Hey, i’m new, as well to FP, as to hearing aids.

I just recently got a pair of Oticon Intent 2, which are paired to my old Samsung galaxy A52 5G, which is running on it’s last breath and needs to be replaced urgently.

So i’d like to get a FP5 next but if the coupling works worse than on my SGA52 (streaming music works fine but phonecalls only work unidirectional, i can hear the other side but need to use the microphone of the phone), FP wouldn’t be an option.

The last replys seem to indicate that there might be a sollution, so i’d like to ask if there are more positive experiences with the new update?

Regards,

Peter

Hi finaly with update FP5.UT2P.B.122 from yesterday big improvments were made.

  • FP5 reconects to hearing aids again after turning them on.
  • Streameing is working again
  • Phone calls seem to work again at least on one hearing aid after the first call was made (first was on both) .

I will have to check further if the problem with further calls only going to one hearing aid persits - but one day of testing is not enough to make final statment.

The Software Update (kind-a) worked for my Starkey Evolv hearing aids.
I had to re-pair them and join the left one to to right one to make calls and streaming work in both ears.
It’s a pity that, allthough the hearingaids can pick-up my voice perfectly, I still have to speak into the phone (which I will still have to hold near my ear then) to make myself audible while calling.
Also I still miss a slider button to disable / enable Media audio in their Bluetooth device settings (so I could choose to have that in my headphones instead).
Nonetheless this is an enormous improvement.
Thanks (so far)!

I have a pair of Oticon Intent 3 miniRITE. I’ll be testing the new FP5.UT2P.B.122.20250422 update, didn’t notice the improvements earlier than today.

  • BT reconnecting and audio streaming to the hearing aids surely seems a lot more stable. No need to perform pairing again yet.
  • Streaming of phone calls broke at the second call (first one was flawless): I still see an option to switch to the Bluetooth hearing aids in the Phone App, but when selecting it, the audio stays at the normal ā€˜Phone’. At least the problem with missing audio is resolved: switching from the malfunctioning Bluetooth to Phone or Speaker works, and the audio stays available even when you go back to Bluetooth again.

Great improvements, will post more when I’ve done some more tests.

Thank you all for your detailed and helpful feedback regarding this. Your insights have been invaluable in helping us identify and address these complex connectivity problems.

We’ve now released Android 15 and wanted to follow up on the hearing aid connectivity improvements.

Based on your earlier feedback, that update resolved many of the major issues you were experiencing:

  • Hearing aids reconnecting automatically when turned on

  • Media streaming working properly in both devices

  • Bluetooth connection staying stable when moving in and out of range

However, some issues were mentioned, in particular around phone calls:

  • Second/subsequent calls sometimes routing audio to only one hearing aid

  • Inconsistent call audio routing (sometimes going to phone speaker instead of hearing aids)

  • Ringtone volume needing to be set to maximum in some cases

We’d love to hear from you:

If you’re using hearing aids with your FP5 on Android 15, could you let us know:

  1. Are you still experiencing any of the phone call issues mentioned above?

  2. How is the overall connectivity and stability working for you now?

  3. Which hearing aid models are you using?

Any feedback would be really helpful as we continue to improve the hearing aid experience. Even if everything is working correctly now, that’s valuable information too!

Thanks for your patience and detailed testing throughout this process.

Best regards,
Michele

I have to restart the Bluetooth for a second call. As it starts a call without my hearing aids.

Dear Michelle,

Thanks for the support, it all works fine now, however, I have one remaining problem. I do not know how to switch the sound off and get it to play via the phone and not my hearing aids, If I change the audio under settings to phone, music will stream to the phone, but all other sound goes to the hearing aids. I can only stop this by disconnecting the bluetooth but then I cannot adjust my hering aids. Is there a solution to this?

I have signia Pure 5 Charge and Go hearing aids.

Kind regards, Paul

Perhaps audio is on in your Bluetooth settings of the hearing aids.
You can check this:
Go to Bluetooth
Tab on your connected hearing aid and see if audio is off.

Thanks, but I do not have the buttons Phone calls and Media audio, only the access to contacts button.

Kind regards, Paul

Do you have the app from Signia for the Pure 5 Charge and Go hearing aids installed?

Thanks, I have the Signia app installed, but it has nothing on sound.

Kind regards, Paul

Just to be certain. You looked not in the app, but in the Bluetooth section of the app Settings?
