FP4 Quickstep keeps stopping after A15 upgrade

Having similar issue (Crashes Quickstep to cause reboot after each long pause during wake-up) with 1&1/Drillisch in Germany. Smartphone not really usable in this kind of bad-performance! But the worst thing IS the silence from Fairphone’s side. The fact that **it happens also to other manufacturers is not really an excuse!!!

I do not agree:

  1. The workaround of installing an alternative launcher is not something that everyone can easily understand or carry out. For example, my 80‑year‑old mother also uses a Fairphone 4. How could I possibly explain to her over the phone which menu she needs to navigate to in order to find and install such a system app? And even if we managed to install, say, the Fossify launcher, all desktop icons would disappear afterwards and have to be manually restored — which is a lot of work.
  2. I installed the alternative launcher Fossify and set it as the default instead of Quickstep. Today my Fairphone 4 became nearly unusable: the WhatsApp app crashed without me noticing, which caused me to miss several messages from my family. The app could no longer be started, and the Bluetooth connection dropped while I was playing Spotify. Overall, the system feels unstable — I would not call it unusable, but it is close.

Why doesn’t Fairphone thoroughly test this beforehand before handing it over to customers?

Hello,

Firstly let’s remember that this forum is not an official channel of Fairphone and it is not, for the most part, run by FP staff. It’s run by volunteer users, including the moderators, who give up some (in some cases a lot of) time to help other users and share their experience. If you wish to converse with Fairphone then the best thing is to contact official support, for example through https://support.fairphone.com
Nobody has said that the problem is solved.
This topic has been marked “solved”, as I’ve already stated, merely to enable new visitors, like yourself, to quickly find the most important information (a suggested work-around). If you prefer to wade through over 100 posts in the vague hope of finding something useful, then that’s fine.
I am sure we’re all aware of the difficulties some users are going to encounter. I’m also aware of the challenge of helping people who come to IT late in life, especially at a distance. But is that a valid reason for not pointing out a solution, albeit temporary and partial, that may help most of the affected users?
I’m sorry to hear that you’re experiencing background instabilities, and you are right to describe the system on your phone as unstable. Unfortunately as far as I know, the origin of this instability has not yet been identified, and indeed there may be several different origins. I advise you to keep an eye on this topic, where we’re likely to see any news as soon as it comes. The forum software has mechanisms to allow you to do that.
The software running on a smartphone is a combination of system, and user apps. The combinations of technical scenarios are astronomic, so it’s quite impossible to test every possible situation. While there is a lot of noise in this topic, there are actually only 28 contributors and many even of them are here to help, and not because they experience the problem themselves.
Testing is of course undertaken, but as I’m sure you know, there is always a calculated risk when distributing a new version of software, and it’s rare that no problems are encountered in the field, even with the most polished products.
The best we users can do, is to make relevant information available to Fairphone in a coherent manner and thus contribute to solving the problem.
If I understand you aright, you are indicating that though replacing the launcher helped to begin with, your phone has since become more unstable.

Hi
I have the same problem (and provider).

Best regards

does the workaround mentioned in the other topic help? if yes they will be merged and the title renamed.

btw. report logs to support, support does not check for logs here…

Hello,

so I have the same problem and tried the workaround after finding it here, BUT the workaround with fossify doesn’t really work either. It is a little better than with quickstep but I can’t swipe the pages on my homescreen nor can I access the last opened apps via the square button at the bottom of my screen. And this gotten worse over time, straight after downloading it, it worked smoother for a few days.

I am also located in Germany and the provider is Drillisch, but I was lately in France also, so Orange might also be involved.

Are there other apps you could recommend, which I could try out?

Thanks

Yes, the workaround with installing another launcher worked.
Thank you for that.

But still annoying, that now I have to setup my screens again.

@rokejulianlockhart
here are the logs

Hi all,

Just updated to A15 and as an Orange user, had the exact same problem of the blinking screen. This is extremely frustrating, to say the least.

I’ve followed this proposed workaround - thank you for that! - but now I don’t have any widget on my “desktop”. When I try to add them, they are not exactly as they used to be and it seems I can’t even add some of the widgets I had previously. Is it linked to the Fossify launcher? I’m really not a technology person, so please excuse me if the question is dumb.

Hi all,

I have serious issues with my FP4 after Android 15 upgrade:

Quickstep launcher stopped working.

I tried Nova Luncher and one from f-droid but with both: sometime a cannot swipe to the second screen with all my apps.

Any idea?

Prefered would be a bug-fix of the android 15 upgrade for FP4. Thanks in advance!

Hi all,

update:
I was able to interrupt the loop and set an alternative launcher
while the launcher is looping
swipe down twice, the first swipe stops the loop
after the second swipe a gear appears next to the on/off switch in the right corner
that activates the settings where I changed the launcher
I dont like the new launcher, but it works
I wrote the problem to support@fairphone.com
Hopefully they will act soon
————————————————————————————————————

the same problem here now.
My FP 4 is unusable

Quickstep loops, so i cant use another launcher

via adb
Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException:
Attempt to invoke virtual method
‘boolean java.lang.String.contains(…)’
on a null object reference
at com.android.launcher3.uioverrides.QuickstepLauncher.isOrangeApp

This makes the cause clear: Quickstep contains code that checks whether apps or SIM data come from the provider „orange“ – and this code gets a NULL reference from you. This causes the launcher to crash. That means: Yes, the crash is directly related to orange. Presumably an entry was incompletely removed when deleting the eSIM. Quickstep expects a valid string like „orange“ or a provider ID. Since the string is null, the launcher immediately crashes as soon as it goes through certain UI states (SCREEN_OFF, home screen state, gesture switching).
Fairphone apparently built this feature into the current build and it is buggy.

can’t get rid of this

adb shell getprop | grep -i orange
[persist.ril.sim.operator]: [orange_f]
[ro.com.google.clientidbase.ms]: [android-orange-fr-rvc3]
[ro.com.google.clientidbase.vs]: [android-orange-fr-rvc3]
[ro.product.brand1]: [orange]

yes, this is an incompletely removed entry from an old provider, namely orange, but before the update it wasn’t a noticeable problem

a complete reset takes a lot of work e.g. with banking apps

so, where can i find a solution please?

I have the exactly same issue!
Already notified the support two weeks ago but tdidn’t here from them until now.

Hey together,
I also have the issue that android tells me that QuickStep and “System” stopped working everytime I swipe to the home screen. There is also a very annoying black screen for about 2 seconds.
I have this issue since I upgraded to Android 15.
Already notified the support 2 weeks ago but didn’t get any reply from them until now!

Also by the way guys if you try to register to this forum by email it does not work, because you are never receiving any registration code, it only works using google mail or any other SSO.
Please @Fairphone guys fix your software and reply your support E-Mails!

Sorry, but I am never going to buy or suggest any Fairphone product ever again, worst support ever!

Installing another launcher should not be the solution, sorry but what kind of support is this?

Its a workaround and no solution.

Fairphone’s support is slow, and has become glacial in recent times. I’m afraid you can’t hope for any reply before next year. But it doesn’t really matter, since getting a reply wouldn’t solve your issue anyway. The only point of contacting their support is giving Fairphone a notion of how many people are impacted, which should motivate them to do something about it.

Fortunately there is that workaround, clumsy or not it allows us to keep using our phones till they find the time to create a patch. :man_shrugging:

Hello !

I have followed this workaround 2 weeks ago : Analyse d'une exception Android
It works and I have noticed no side effect

Hope this can help you too !

Regards

Thank you, very much

Exactly the same problem
I wonder why fairphone hesitate to annonce something about that
I stay with my solution: annother launcher
Why is this thread marked as solved?
There are only bypasses, no solutions

Read the post marked as solution! In bold its mentioned its a workaround and

This worked for me! Thanks
