FP3 - possible first repair required

Had my FP3+ since 2019 and zero problems. Very happy with it.

I switched to e/OS end of last year. Still runs great, now with added (subtracted?) benefit of excommunicated Google.

Last month or so it’s been getting a tad sluggish. The latest e/OS update has trouble with banking apps, but I feel this is unrelated to recent slowed performance.

My hunch is I need to replace the battery, as it does drain quicker than it used to.

Is there a way to fault find with such a vague and insignificant issue? Or is it just a case of trial and error replacing parts in some logical order?

Any advice is hugely appreciated.

Big love to FP team

Just some toughts:

  • A (new?) app might be consuming a lot of system resources and energy in the background
  • Is there still enough free space in your internal storage? I would keep 20 % free.
  • It can never hurt to make a backup of the data that is indispensable to you.

Ok, thank you for the tips.

I have 40% free space, so that’s all good.

Seems the biggest drain is my mobile network, which took 90% since last full charge.

So … more ideas: How old is your SIM card? Has your “reception situation” changed in the time performance started to deteriorate? (e.g. is the phone in different places where signals might be weaker; this could even mean a room more shielded from outdoors)

My SIM is maybe two and a half years old, or just under. I am running Surfshark One, which perhaps makes a difference, though the usage data says 7%.

Reception is fine, but I don’t really use my phone a lot anyway; a few WhatsApp messages, some SMS, very few calls.

I have also noticed a couple of my apps are ever so slightly jittery on startup. My Protonmail app and WhatsApp sometimes ask to repeat biometric unlocking, and then sometimes minimise immediately. Don’t know if that is related.

Other than that, I don’t abuse my phone. It’s never near moisture, like in the bathroom when I shower etc.

Related to this: I also have a FP3{+}. I had a similar problem, battery life much decreased and slower response time. I tried a new battery (from Fairphone) and it made no difference. I suspect that the answer is that I installed NordVPN and Avira Active Shield. But I don’t see either of these in the default FP battery usage app. Is there a way of seeing the battery load caused by these 2 apps? Anyone else with similar experience?

Go to the app Settings, then Battery.
Somewhere there you can find how much battery a single app is using.
I have no Fairphone 3 with standard OS at hand.

I posted a screenshot above, but have another more recent one.

This morning, the phone’s OS was relentlessly sending updates about blocked trackers, so I’m thinking this laggy behaviour may be an issue with e/OS 3.1.4.

Or a virus/malware that’s managed to penetrate my layer of snake oil

this wasnt meant for you and was rather an answer to @NickyF because of the Anitvirus App, as such often bring more problems than any real positive effect and for sure it always can make sense to deinstall recently installed apps to check, if this makes a difference
Either way the comment as well as your response were flagged and deleted now.

All good, I wasn’t insulted.

Cheers

Yes, but the VPN and the Virus guard do not appear in the list of apps.

Suspected daylight savings time switch side effect, but needs confirmation …

Can be stopped …

Wow, ok.

That’s super interesting and unexpected re the daylight savings theory.

Some form of low rent millennium bug or just smartphone seasonal depression

Cheers for the info!

The anti virus app and the NordVPN app don’t appear.

They’re both balled into one, Surfshark One. It is further down the list and stays around 7%
