My FP2 is highly unreliable in making phone calls, empties is new battery very quickly and gets very hot, even doing nothing. How come? Can this possibly be fixed by renewing the core module?

Getting hot is usually caused by an app “running wild” (i.e. letting the SoC do overtime). For me, it helps to shut off the phone and turn it on again (sometimes up to three times before the “heating process” is off).
But with all the additional trouble, I would really recommend to head @AnotherElk’s advice.
