FP 4 won't turn on

Hi there,

I have a Fairphone 4 (from 2023) running LineageOS. For a few weeks it has been occasionally rebooting spontaneously, which I thought was a software issue. However, today it shut down all of the sudden and has since not responded to any of my attempts at turning it on. I have tried:

  • Leaving it for more than half an hour to charge
  • Holding “volume down” as a plug it into by computer
  • Removing and reinstalling the battery
  • Holding “volume up” and the power button
  • Turning it on without a battery (only power supply plugged in)

On my Linux machine fastboot devices does not list anything and there is no other sight of life like sound of vibration. So I don’t think it is an issue with the screen. I don’t know how much battery was left before the phone shut down, but it did not give me the usual “battery is low” alert, so I guess there must have been a reasonable amount of power left.

What other diagnostic can I perform? I could take it apart and probe it with a multimeter, I am reasonable skilled with a soldering iron, but I don’t have the electronics knowledge to read the schematics and diagnose individual components. What would be the worst case scenario? Can I get the data off the phone?

EDIT: Is there a chance that the charge port is what’s broken? That would be fairly easy to replace and affordable, but the fact that it won’t turn on with the batter (most likely) still having charge makes me doubt it’s something as simple.

If there’s a fairphoneangel near you, then you might ask if the angel has a FP4 for trying to swap the charge port or the battery to be sure.
