I cant argue with any of this, but just simply based on current world events, I’d question if they are able to secure the volume of components at the correct price, in order to continue manufacturing. Not to mention the general sentiment from users, which is kinda lukewarm on this forum, but I recognise we are a lot more harsh on Fairphone than the general audience.
According to https://omdia.tech.informa.com/pr/2026/jan/global-smartphone-market-grew-2percent-in-2025-while-memory-headwinds-set-the-stage-for-a-challenging-2026 there have been 1.25 billion smartphones “shipped” globally in 2025.
If I made no mistake in the calculation that means the 864,856 Fairphones sold over 12 years are the equivalent of about 22 minutes compared to the complete smartphone industry in 2025.
Edit: see below, the correct result is ~6 hours, not 22 minutes.
I like that comparison! ![]()
That seemed a little low looking at the numbers, so I calculated it myself
But I’m not certain about my calculation.
Minutes in a year: 525 600 (365 * 24 * 60)
Part Fairphones sold overall per sold phones in 2025: 864 856 / 1 250 000 000 = 0,0006918848
Minutes in 2025 of total sold Fairphones: 0,0006918848 * 525 600 = 363,65465088, approx. 6 hours.
Still very low. What way did you get to 22mins?
My calculation was the same as yours but I forgot the different meaning of the comma when copying 864,856 from the initial post to my German calculator app. ![]()
If I remember correctly during Corona while the overall number of sold phones decreased, Fairphone had an increase in sales however not in prices
Because of the low volumes, living wage programm and long warranty the actual hardware cost should thake a smaller share of the end-price compared to other brands.
Are there reliable public numbers of how many devices fairphone sells every year?
