Fairphone 6 : Regular or e/OS?

I was in the same problem like you but with Apple, but it’s work. Okay the combo AOSP + Linux is not easier than Apple (iOS / macOS / iPadOS / tvOS) but you can find alternative.

Like all the tools I use for community management (FB/Insta/Canva/Gmail). I have three Gmail work adresses… Using Whatsapp a lot for managing groups, the children’s classes. Then Yespark, Waze, Citymapper, the Microsoft365 suite. That piles up.

I figure it will be easier to try when I’ll have less work-related issues, just a few years from now.

Dear blix,

I am a satisfied user of the Fairphone. The privacy is of course excellent, and I appreciate the fact that this phone is produced in an ethical way and is repareable. As a Dutch person (and European), I naturally like that it is designed in the Netherlands (Europe). On the advice of my son, I chose the most radical version, the FP6 with /e/OS.

However, coming from an iPhone XR, I do have to note a few things that you apparently also have doubts about regarding /e/OS:

  • CarPlay does not work (though Waze does)

  • Payments are not possible except, for example, with Curve, but that is an app that only links to your credit card, not to a regular debit card.

  • Known issue, but still not resolved for me: zooming with the camera does not work.

  • I cannot download my photos to my Mac.

If you choose the standard Android OS, I assume you will not have the first two issues. So the choice is yours: privacy or more functionality.

One of the people who answered my earlier question said, “Maybe you shouldn’t always strive for perfection; good is good enough.” Wise advice… What is good enough for you?

Thanks for that feedback. I’m actually not a fan of paying things with the phone. Don’t keep all your eggs in one basket, is my thing. A friend of mine recently got his phone stolen and having his credit card info on it was an additionnal hassle.

I chose regular Android for all the reasons I stated above, but there’s still a part of me who’s on the fence. Maybe a couple years down the line I’ll make the jump!

And ? It’s possible to use all this apps on /e/OS, that’s not a problem.

That is not what I hear. At least not in an immediate, reliably constant way. Also, if I keep using those there’s not much interest to securing the phone againts GAFAs (Waze belongs to Google for instance). And there’s also that thing looming in the air about Google tightening the locks, I want to be on the other side of that to make the jump.

To sum it up, I have e/os in my sights, it’s just not the right time for me to make the jump.

What you heard but me i using /e/OS…

I’m surprised to hear that. Maybe you just mean that your photos don’t automatically get sucked up to iCloud.
I think you can probably transfer your photos directly to your Mac over USB or Bluetooth, and there are other clouds than iCloud with automatic transfer.
