Fairphone 5 Will not Charge due to "debris"

When plugged my Fairphone 5 in to charge I got a pop-up error on my screen saying it could not charge due to debris or liquid in the port.

I cleaned the port fully but the problem persisted so I purchased a new USB-c adapter from the Fairphone website and installed as per the video guide.

The battery on the phone had died at this point. When I plug in the charger (with the new USB-c adapter fitted) the Fairphone welcome logo comes on but is quickly replaced by a dead battery symbol (outline of a battery with a red bar at the bottom) with a plug in the centre of the battery.

I have left the phone plugged in to the charger for over an hour but it will not charge. I could send it for repair but Fairphone will factory reset my device due to GDPR and since i cannot turn it on i will lose everything. I could order a new battery but it also might not charge.

Your battery is not dead, but completely empty.
See if your phone charges today.
