Fairphone 4: network disappears intermittently

For about three weeks or so, the network has been disappearing. This means no calls, texts or data (though wifi work’s fine). Once I notice, a reboot fixes it and the network (in my case Giffgaff) is back. I can have several losses in an hour or none for several hours. I have not noticed anything that may link the times where the network has disappeared.

I don’t see anything similar when I search the forum. Is it a known issue? Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you have no network and switch airplane mode on and off, does this also works or do you really need to reboot to fix the network problem?

I’ve tried airplane mode but to no effect. Reboot seems the only way as I’ve found.

Are you on stock Android or something else like E/Os or lineage?

You can try to convert your physical SIM to an eSIM through the giffgaff app (it’s a quick process) OR ask giffgaff to send you a new SIM, as this sounds like a classical SIM issue.
Another potential quick fix is to GENTLY (with a soft cloth, can be a shirt if no alternatives are readily available) rub the contacts of the SIM card and reinsert it.

Stock android with all the usual updates

I think I’ll give a new SIM a go, as mine is probably about three years old. Good tip. Will report back once I’ve done that.

I had the same problem a while back. For me the best solution was to disable 5G. I think there was also a thread about this

Thanks for the suggestion. Getting a new SIM a couple of days ago, as someone else suggested, seems to have worked. So, it looks like it probably is/was a faulty SIM issue. I’ll give it a few more days before marking it as a solution. Plus, I’d be reluctant to go without 5G, so hoping to avoid that.

As suggested by wallacewells above, the solution seems to be to get a new SIM (especially as mine was a few years old also). Thanks!
