Hey

I’m considering plugging my phone into my PC via the audio jack while it’s charging so I can listen to podcasts on the PC (I can’t find a program for proper podcast syncing).

The thing is, the audio jack and power cables are on opposite sides of the phone.
Couldn’t one fit a small extension cord from the mini-USB port to go around the side of the phone and end in a mini-USB port next to the audio jack? Turned sideways to make it fit better?

Obviously, it’d make the phone’s cover slightly bigger, but I’d still like the idea.
I guess I could see if anyone releases a wireless charging cover, but it’d be kinda silly since it spends more power and I’m plugging my phone into my PC anyway.

Hey,
after the update I checked my wireless charging module which I bought before, but with old version it dosn’t work:

Now it is working like expected and it’s possible to use it in the default cover without any changes!
I tested charging with this charger:

How long charging times e.g. for 20%, 50% or even 90% ?
My FP2 charges on my 2A charger 10% per 20 minutes.

@anon9505190 I will measure the time

Since I obtained Dirks (dvl) 3D-printed cases for FP2 especially for including a 2nd battery I will have sooner or later the same task. However before I need to order 2nd battery from FP’s shop.

So, I’m really looking for some 5" Android device with hardware keyboard, so a hardware keyboard for Fairphone would give me one more reason to consider it. (apart from replaceable parts and being open for alternate OSes)

Fairphone is quite expensive itself, so I’d really appreciate the cost not to exceed 100 euro.

Bluetooth keyboard cases come to mind. Else it’s BlackBerry PRIV for you. There is not much more left. All companies still copy Apple input design wise (as less as possible, touch only). I don’t think that the trend will go back anytime soon.

I’d buy Priv, if it were rootable.
And what device would you suggest for a slide-out keyboard case? Couldn’t find anything available recently.

No slide out. You put your phone in a case, the other side contains a keyboard. That’s all. If you open it, you have your phone on the left and a keyboard on your right. Most of them are made for big tablets but I’ve seen smaller ones. I have no clue about the quality/size.

Like other smartphones the FP2 allows you to take right now any USB keyboard with a cheap adapter cable or USB stick for OTG (on-the-go) . Me , for example I take with me in my bag a rubber keyboard for 5 euros. If the keyboard has another USB plug for mouse device you even replace your finger as touch device by using a mouse device. It was shown somewehere else on the forum that it works without any setting change. If you use this cable solution the battery will not loose much power compared to the bluetooth solution. However I pursued an electronic board maker to build a small new device to convert the 2nd internal USB connector into a 2nd micro USB connector to power charge the phone while using the 1st USB connector. Therefor another phone case may cost you 25 euros . The announcement will be shown in another topic here at the forum , category DIY (do-it-yourself)

That’s not exactly what I want. I often use the phone in places where I don’t have any flat space to lay the phone on.

I want to be able to stand on the street and type on the physical keyboard

Fairphone is simply not the kind of smartphone where customers pay for additional features e.g. hard or software goodies.
In opposite fairphone offers wide openess of hard + software to let users create their own addon solution. In your case it is a simple keyboard bag for tablet or smartphones . In germany Hama is one of the cheapest:

Some people are maybe disappointed because they expect from a 500 EU/550$ smartphone “It must have this” or "It must have that for this price. " It is a pity that they misunderstand the concept and business model and feel mislead or even cheated for not so few money. If they don’t open their phone for own extensions and are not very moral inspired for the fairtrade then they maybe better not choose a fairphone.

True, it’s better to keep the complexity of the “standard” phone down. Thus less hardware/software bugs.

I always thought the modules were made to exactly allow 3rd party extensions. But I’m just not sure how “open” FP as a company is about them right now. Maybe they want to keep it closed so they can make some money licensing it? I asked a few questions related to this but never got a straight answer. Maybe they just don’t know themselves right now and are just experimenting with the very simple camera module. Most modules are not very sophisticated right now and I’m not sure what other extras could be added. Software-wise most of this will be bin-blob’ed anyhow (Camera).

The extension port is, as far as I understand the forum posts here, not OTG. This is sad, because it would have made interesting cases possible. But I don’t know much about this. I was interested in using a YubiKey with a FP2 and that would still have worked.

No, OTG on internal USB host would not make much sense. @dvl informed me about usb host back connector.
So, be lucky, if you are still interested in using YubiKey. @keesj from FP technical team showed on youtube the simple implementation (only USB-A that’s all) of it.

Yep, that’s what I was trying to say.

I hope next days I find time for testing my breakouts first. My break through may be earlier by using user space usb drivers . This evening I found the other important link GitHub - skjolber/external-nfc-api: Interaction with external NFC readers in Android . If all works out well than a new custom rom maybe forgo or can be avoided by using the external nfc app. I guess most people will try to print out their own cover. So a new design only for NFC breakout inclusion will soon be necessary.
