Factory reset and data back up

Hi, I am a novice to computers and android phones but feel I need to factory reset my FP2 because of full page pop ups and some performance issues which could in my mind be from infection. Following on-line instructions I need to back up my data however when I connect via usb to my linuxed pc the FP2 folder is empty or won’t transfer any files/data. Any ideas why this wont work please?

Are you switching the phone over to File transfer mode after connecting it? There’s instructions over on the Fairphone support site:

The note on that page sounds like what you’re describing:

NOTE: If you don’t select File transfer on the phone, the device will be still recognized by your computer but will appear empty.
