/e/ for FP3 (Google free OS)

Why should i trust /e/ any more than google or microsoft with an online account and cloud storage? In fact i would trust them more about not being hacked. The account requirement ruins it for me.

There is no account required, this is something that can but must not be used or setup, not sure where you get this information from

The /e/ account is not mandatory
BUT, the complete /e/ philosophy and ecosystem is build on that ecosystem.

If you skip this step during setup or if you delete the /e/ account after setup you have nothing left then a very outdated LineageOS with old microG and outdated forked apps.

In this case, if you don’t want to use the /e/ ecosystem it is much better to use directly a other custom ROM like LineageOS for itself, LineageOS4microG or iodé.

/e/OS doesn’t really make sense anymore and doesn’t bring you any advantages. Quite the opposite

Thus /e/ is entirely useless because it defeated its own privacy claim.

The system is made for people who want to use a system with more or less no Google but do need it easy to set up and like easy back up ect. So no its not useless in general and you are welcome to use something that fits your needs better.

You dont seem to understand the argument at all. De-googling is more than removing google. Its about removing all account and cloud services. Forcing a user on a different cloud setup defeats the purpose of de-googling as it still invades your privacy for multiple reasons.

Could you please calm yourself down a bit? You may think you are an expert and your opinion is the only truth, but I’m sure its not. You are welcome to discuss Pros and Cons, but please accept there are other use cases and opinions out there.

So again: no one forces you to set up an account when installing e/OS,.

Go ahead and discuss this in the /e/ forum. But be sure, it will take only one day and you will get banned
Or discuss these fundamental issues in a security forum. There you can argue with many others for days about the sense or nonsense.

I don’t understand what your goal is here.
What do you want to achieve?
Everything has already been said, right?

As yvmuell has already said, no one is forcing you to do anything.

Surely I will get banned for exposing them selling a false sense of security? Standard practice these days,

I don’t understand what your goal is here.

Simple, determine whether or not i should install /e/ on my FP4 when I decide to buy one because i dont want google. Or get the one already preinstalled with it. So far with the information and replies i got its a no.

You may think you are an expert

Are personal attacks allowed here?
Unless you have experience building custom hardened kernels or patching out backdoors in intel CPUs you should not try and start this kind of conversation with someone that does.

Personal attacks, being personal, are subjective, and tolerated to a degree. However whereas engagment with the ‘author’ is officially disuaded, personally I have early always respond. Add a smile.

I feel a somewhat ominous urge to link to FAQ - Fairphone Community Forum  .

If you have this competences, you better build your own ROM or tweak LOS in order to for your needs.

/e/ is not for you then, it’s for less advanced user who don’t want to be under surveillance of Google. And /e/ don’t track them. So it’s already a step in the right direction.

Perhaps LeOS is something for you.

I’m still using /e/, still happy with it too. (There is now V1.)

Does anybody use text-to-speech? E.g. for navigation? Would I have to setup something for it or does it just work by itself? Does it work in english language? Does it work or is there a solution for german language?

/e/OS includes eSpeak NG to provide TTS, which supports German … e / os / espeak-ng · GitLab.
A number of users don’t like what they are hearing, though, a well-received alternative is given here (also includes a German voice) … Alternative to eSpeak? - #14 by pmoody - Applications - /e/ community

I don’t actively use TTS, so I don’t know about setup apart from OsmAnd. It can’t hurt to just have a look at the settings of the Apps you want to use with TTS as well as Settings - System - Languages & input - Advanced - Text-to-speech output.

Thanks for the advice. The mentioned alternative to eSpeak is Ivona which was also available in Google Play Store several years ago and then suddenly vanished. I was very surprised because I have also tried it for a while. I don’t know the reason for leaving the Play Store but I now have doubts about Ivona without further knowledge and understanding about the background.

On the other hand I personally don’t mind not so beautiful voices like eSpeak might be, as long as they are capable of speaking german, while others may be far better to understand. But my preferred bicycle application depends on this language, because the programmer didn’t make it flexible enough to use other languages, like OsmAnd is capable to use (I currently use Flite with OsmAnd, which also does not feature a so-nice voice…).

The post I linked to claims regarding Ivona

“In fact, it was good enough for Amazon to buy it, remove it from the playstore, and make it as a speech engine for businesses so they can charge a lot for it. Fortunately for us, the old apk file and some of the voices are still out on the internet to download from other places.”

I tried Flite once back in the days when TTS got removed from LineageOS, for comical effect when it came to German street names, because Flite only had an English voice, or I didn’t find a German one.
Luckily OsmAnd can do speech without TTS for basic navigation instructions, as mentioned earlier in this topic.
But now there’s eSpeak for a start.
