Desktop mode broken since Android 14 update (white noise in external monitor)

The cable does make the difference. I found a usb 4 80gb cable very reliable with modern displays. I have a 240w version for charging purposes. But its still overkill for fairphone. I have an adapter from Walmart by onn brand. Full size HDMI, USB and one Type-C version. Its just enough to add a USB keyboard, power the thing via Type-C and have it run at 4k 30fps. Its better than Nothing. But if you need anything more for ports. Tough luck. It will crash your device. I find WiFi and a USB keyboard and mouse a compermise. If you use bluetooth. It just disconnects after a few minutes of inactivity. This would free up the usb port for things like sd card readers and flash drives. SSDs can connect but some need power to use. Same with hard drives. Pick your poison in terms of desktop mode. Its still buggy in any form. Just facts from experience of using it over the years.

I have/had the same issue, which is how I came across this thread.

I use a USB C male to HDMI female adapter (Anker PowerExpand +, model A8312)

On a 4K 60hz TV (Samsung) everything works fine.
On a 4K 60hz display (Dell) everything works fine.

On a 1440p 144hz display (LG) I get similar results to the person opening the thread.

On a 1080p 60hz display (Dell) everything works fine.

I used the same cable for testing the 4K Dell and 1440p LG monitors.

Now, it seems that the Anker adapter will output 100hz at most as that’s what it shows up as in Windows when used with my laptop.

So, possible causes for the issues:

  1. The display adaptor only outputting 100hz on a 144hz display.
  2. LG monitors.
  3. 1440p resolution.
  4. Any monitor with a refresh rate higher than 60hz.

In conclusion I’m not sure this is an Android/Fairphone issue at all.

I have a Fairphone 5 running Android 14 (FP5.UT27.B.059.20240809)

With a cable that is certified for 4k display it works now. Thanks for the responses.

I don’t care about hertz (Refresh Rate) as much. It turns out i recommend a HDMI 2.1 or newer with full support and its still laggy. I grew up in the 90’s with CRTs. All I really care about is latency. Even using it in WiFi mode is nothing but lag. 2 Seconds or 10 seconds of delay depending on how good is the connection. I can tolerate a 2 second delay because its about the same as a Bluetooth headset and its similar to gaming and watching videos. The movement of speech is off from what is said compared to what you hear. Resolution and refresh rate is just a bonus with modern displays. We have never had that luxury with CRTs. Usually it was a set resolution of 480i for most CRTs of the era. 1080i was for a few sets of the era with HD support. Gaming is really ruined with input lag being so bad in desktop mode. Mostly stuff with a lot happening on screen at once requiring an instant response. Simulation seems to be fine with gameplay being point and click. I cant say the same for games like FPS. RCT Classic can be played with a mouse and keyboard controls on Android. Experience with desktop mode is hit or miss depending on what you are using it for. I mostly use it for gaming. Doing basic tasks shouldn’t be an issue like checking email as an example. This is from my experience with desktop mode on Android with life experience in general.
