Computer suddenly doesn't recognise FP2

Having used my FP2 with my PC for the last year with no problems, last night it suddenly stopped seeing it.
When I plug the USB in to the laptop is says “USB device not recognised” and recommends I replace the device.

I have been using it as a charger, WiFi tether, memory stick.
The cable is fine. The laptop has never been any trouble. Fairphone is… Eccentric.
Both the laptop and the fp2 are running avast security.

Any ideas what to do?

Did you try any of the solutions you can find in the hundreds of topics when you search for recognize?

How would you know? After human error (not changing the usb status from charging to data transfer) a (partially) broken cable is the most common reason for this issue.
